Historia
One of Jon Fosse’s most acclaimed novels, Boathouse is told from the perspective of an unnamed narrator leading a largely hermit-like existence until he unexpectedly encounters a long-lost childhood friend and his wife. Told partially in a stream-of-consciousness style and with an atmosphere reminiscent of a gripping crime novel, Boathouse slowly unravels the story of a love triangle leading to jealousy, betrayal, and eventually death.

Excellent
Revisado: 03-19-25
Jon Fosse is not for everyone but I quite like his work. Kare Conradi did a superb job with this title. In fact, I'd say he does a better job with Fosse than any other narrator I've heard do him. I really wish they would have hired him to do the Septology titles as the narrator they chose for that is dreadful.
Listen to the sample. If you can't imagine listening to 4 and a half hours of that kind or repetition, skip this title, and Fosse altogether. But if that "maximalist minimal" style agrees with you, this is an excellent entry point. Much better than A Shining, imo.

It was up to her to appoint herself. That night led to what eventually became a six-figure freelance career as a sought-after marketing and copywriting consultant, all while sipping coffee from her front porch in Costa Rica.

Painful listen
Revisado: 09-10-24
This has got to be one of the worst performances I've ever heard in over 1000 audiobooks. Why does this person pause in the middle of sentences for no reason and then skip periods altogether. It's a nightmare. Plus, GET ON WITH IT! I'm hours in and she's still going on about how horrible her life was. We get it! We didn't think we were buying a memoir!

Historia
Set in Nicaragua in 1984, The Stars at Noon is a story of passion, fear, and betrayal told in the voice of an American woman whose mission in Central America is as shadowy as her surroundings. Is she a reporter for an American magazine, as she sometimes claims, or a contact person for the anti-war group Eyes of Peace? And who is the rough English businessman she begins an affair with? The two foreigners become entangled in sinister plots and ever-widening webs of corruption, until a desperate attempt to escape the country brings their relationship to a crisis point.

Why get a male narrator for this?!
Revisado: 07-08-24
Johnson is my favorite writer. Patton is my favorite narrator. But why the publisher hired a male narrator for a first person story with a female protagonist is beyond me.
I feel bad not giving this five stars but it's just a ridiculous decision on their part.

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Excellent read
Revisado: 03-28-24
I quite enjoyed this though am disappointed I'm now ahead of the tv show so know which characters will live and die.
One very odd thing about this title is that the reader pronounces the author's name as Mike not Mick. Very weird thing to not get noticed by a producer.

I thought this book was just OK. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. But the performance was great and I will look out for other books by this narrator (Tender is the Night will be next). Kudos to Therese Plummer!

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Mistake of narration
Revisado: 11-07-22
The book's good. Fun, even. But it was a mistake to not have Tarantino do the whole thing.
Note that I normally think Edoardo Ballerini does a great job — I've got almost 20 books that he narrates and have never had a complaint before. However, the issue here is two-fold: not only does he not have the enthusiasm of Tarantino, but he mispronounces a few names and words (Michael Curtiz should be Cur-Teez not Curtis; Bud Boetticher should be Bettick-Her; auteurist should be ought tour ist, not otterist, etc). I never understand why publishers don't provide phonetic pronunciations to narrators as it's an easy way to elevate the reading.
Still worth hearing, but a little disappointing.

Historia
In the tornado that was downtown New York in the 1980s, John Lurie stood at the vortex. After founding the band The Lounge Lizards with his brother, Evan, in 1979, Lurie quickly became a centrifugal figure in the world of outsider artists, cutting-edge filmmakers, and cultural rebels. Now Lurie vibrantly brings to life the whole wash of 1980s New York as he developed his artistic soul over the course of the decade and came into orbit with all the prominent artists of that time and place.

Fantastic
Revisado: 11-09-21
Loved every minute of this and wish it were longer. I was a teenager when Voice of Chunk came out and I was fascinated with the album cover. The album was my first encounter with spiritual / avant-garde jazz and I was hooked. Listening to Lurie tell his stories / history here will be a delight to anyone who loves his work. His partnerships and relationships (Evan, Basquiat, Jarmusch, Ribot, and on and on) are amazing fodder for great stories. Highly recommended.
