Historia
In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.

Valuable critique but slathered in condescension and over generalization
Revisado: 01-15-25
As a practicing clinical psychologist, I must confess this book does levy some hard to hear critiques about the current status of the mental health field. But don’t expect a balanced account as she seems to take many of the points to the extreme since anger does sell. From the production side, it was a terrible idea to have her read this book as the obvious disgust in her voice made even the very good points difficult to hear.

Historia
Am I happy enough? This has been a pivotal question since America's inception. "Am I not happy enough because I am depressed?" is a more recent version. Psychotherapist Gary Greenberg shows how depression has been manufactured---not as an illness but as an idea about our suffering, its source, and its relief. He challenges us to look at depression in a new way.

Essential Read for Psychology
Revisado: 05-31-23
Reading this book in 2023 we can see the situation is only getting worse. Rates of depression, rates of suicide, rates of despair are only increasing. This book highlights why. A much more enlightened view of human emotional experience is needed.
