I don't get it
Revisado: 04-28-25
I downloaded this book because of the excellent reviews and it being in the top 10 nyt books in 2024. it's well written and narrated, but it stays at a very low simmer for 85% of the book. Otherwise, the ending was interesting, but I think I just expected more from the plot. Also, listening to conversations of...like ... up- talking, overly dramatic college students for 12+ hours is...like... not enjoyable for me.

Dark and Difficult material...
Revisado: 04-08-25
But so worthwhile! this book is so well done it's hard for me to even put into words. The narrator is so believable and talented, I think it's the best narration I've ever heard. the author took almost 20 years to write this book and it shows, these characters are so well developed and nuanced, it really is a fascinating perspective on SA and the MeToo movement.

Historia
Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

interesting storyline

the story did not unfold the way I expected it to. kept my attention and I listened through it quickly. I also enjoyed the reader's voices for the different characters, it was easy to differentiate when she was moving from character to character

wonderful!
Revisado: 10-29-24
The more I listened to this book, the more I appreciate the very unique perspective that only HRC can share. She is a true American icon, having dedicated her entire adult life to public service. I can't wait to hear her read from this book at Carnegie Hall tomorrow evening. The last chapter and epilogue of this audiobook had me weeping, almost uncontrollably, now that we are just one week away from Election Day 2024, when so much is on the line.. Thank you, Madame Secretary. May God bless America.

this is masterfully written and narrated. such a tragic tale, but the though lines the author finds between the crime and her own lived experience are so poignant. loved it!

mixed feelings
Revisado: 09-14-24
the story was pretty interesting but I did not enjoy this narrator's voice. I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't read by a computer generated voice. also I kind of wish I would have known there was mention of an eating disorder in this book. that might be my fault if I missed something in the description, but I probably wouldn't have downloaded it had I known.

Historia
Behind the curtain of her happy on-screen persona, Valerie Bertinelli’s life has been no easy ride, especially when it comes to her own self-image and self-worth. She waged a war against herself for years, learning to equate her value to her appearance as a child star on One Day at a Time and punishing herself in order to fit into the unachievable Hollywood mold. She struggled to make her marriage to Eddie Van Halen—the true love of her life—work, despite all the rifts the rock-star lifestyle created between them.

open and honest
Revisado: 02-11-24
From the outside looking in, it seems Valerie has led such a charmed life, and yet, listening to this book, it seems she has suffered so many of the same "inner demons" that I struggle with. I have not read her previous books, but I probably will now. I found this book very relatable, well, except for the part about loving (and being loved by) one of the hottest rock stars of all time. 🙂

blown away
Revisado: 07-12-23
I am blown away by Ms Miller's ability to relay what she went through. the metaphors she uses illustrate exactly how absurd many of the circumstances were around the way she was treated and her trial. her honesty and vulnerability make this horrible story all that much more impactful. truly, one of the best things I've ever read / listened to.

Didn't want it to end!
Revisado: 05-11-23
As a lifelong U2 devotee, it has been a dream of mine to grab a pint with Bono/the band and thank them for all that they have given me. And although this audiobook was a "one sided conversation", I am so appreciative of this chance to get to know Bono, and his motivations on a deeper level. brilliant!
