There are a few good ideas in this book that I have tried out with marginal success, however, for the most part, this book is a waste of time. Doucleff references most of the standard parenting books (by Faber, Markham, Siegel, or Cohen). My advice to potential readers is go straight to the source (I've read them all) and skip this book. In the same vein that Doucleff advises her readers to avoid advice from unreliable sources, such as a "surgeon turned sportswriter", I would advise potential readers to avoid taking advice from a chemist turned journalist turned self-appointed parenting expert. She simply is not an expert. It is apparent that she has little experience with children.

One of the major differences I have with the author is that she instructs parents to stop engaging in activities that are "child-centered", then goes on to cite zoos or children's museums as examples. I enjoy playing with my kids and engaging in many of the activities that she would consider to be "child-centered". I simply can't come around to her philosophy (which is boring, in my opinion).

For parents interested in teaching autonomy to their children (as Doucleff stresses), I would recommend Jane Nelson's "Positive Discipline" series, which has much more practical advice.

I appreciate the education on marijuana industry tactics. This book focuses on politics.

I had hoped for more science. I had hoped for a detailed analysis of how marijuana affects the body, including references to controlled studies or epidemiological studies. The content of this book is mostly anecdotes.

Great story that is well-researched and well-written. The editing, however, needs improvement. Listen to it.

Got this on sale for a couple bucks and thought I'd give it a try (most sleep deprived parents are willing to give anything a try). Audible's reputation dropped a couple notches as far as I'm concerned -- I can't believe they were willing to sell this garbage . I get the impression this might have been written in a different language for a very different culture; and maybe something got lost in translation. One thing is apparent: the author is not an expert in baby sleep, and does not have any advice to offer above common sense.

Get the "The Happy Sleeper" instead. Well worth the credit.

To classify this book as "American History" is a stretch. This book is not a biography. It is folklore. It interesting, in that it paints a good picture of frontier and Native-American culture in the mid to late 1800's.

As a southerner, I have no issue with southern / country accents. What is annoying (and inaccurate) is that it is attributed to a New Jersey emigrant (Jeremiah Johnson).

I agree with another reviewer: might be worth buying on sale but not worth a credit.

Overall, it is a good book with interesting material. I don't like the way the author jumps around in an incoherently . . . which she somehow suggests in the prologue is a superior way to deliver the information. I also don't like how the story stresses individual historical accounts with little (albeit, some) reference to the science of infection, transmission, and biochemical characteristics of the flu virus. Personally, I listened to Barry's book several years ago and I liked his much better.

This book is hard to put down. While I listened to the audiobook mostly, I also purchased the hardcover mainly for referencing maps and author's notes. The book gives a great picture of the civil war era life in the 'Tween Rivers area as well as the interesting story of Jack Hinson's personal war. It is apparent that the author spent years of meticulous research in order to write this book. While I believe the essence of Jack Hinson's story to be true (and justified - as any native has a right to defend himself against an invading, foreign army), I do think that most of the events portrayed with regard to Hinson are more legend than fact. The author does not give the name of a single victim of Hinson's sniper attacks . . . and none the kills have been referenced. While the author portrays Hinson as neutral, I also question this, as all of his sons support the Confederate cause . . . and so I question whether Jack's murdered sons may have indeed been "bushwackers". Regardless, the book would be an excellent read even without the chivalrous revenge story of Jack Hinson. Be aware the story progresses slowly and the author unnecessarily restates points quite often, which can get a little annoying. Overall, though, I'd recommend this book to anybody interested in civil war history and survival stories.

Overall I enjoyed listening to the lecture but the author gets off-topic too easily and covers too many broad categories. Author considers himself to be an expert in way too many fields such as psychology, evolution, sociology, anthropology, neuroscience, sexuality, and health science. Lectures are too scripted and not truly "lectures", more like chapters in a book. Narrator sounds like a bad actor auditioning for a part in a play. Way too dramatic. Crackling voice gets annoying.

-too many redactions
-narcissistic author
-interesting to anyone with the maturity level of an adolescent boy
- I gave it a 2 instead of a one because some of the stories about CIA operations are mildly interesting
