Historia
Millions of Americans have lost confidence in our political and economic system. After years of stagnant wages, volatile job markets, and an unwillingness by those in power to deal with profound threats such as climate change, there is a mounting sense that the system is fixed, serving only those select few with enough money to secure a controlling stake. With the characteristic clarity and passion that has made him a central civil voice, Robert B. Reich shows how wealth and power have interacted to install an elite oligarchy, eviscerate the middle class, and undermine democracy.

This is not The Fourth Turning
Revisado: 10-18-24
Will the Zoomers, born after 1994, succeed in becoming the new Greatest Generation, after the traumas of school shooting drills and COVID-19? A new Age of Prosperity like 1950-80? Boomers' time and money were wasted in Vietnam, Gen Xers in Kuwait, Millennials in Iraq, why? The Dulles Brothers and the Bush family? J. Edgar Hoover's Hundred Years' War on Labor? Ayn Rand's Hundred Years' War on What Is To Be Done? Fred Koch's Hundred Years' War for Carbon Subsidies? Milton Friedman's Thirty Years' War on Keynesian economics!
No mention of how homeownership and education was giveth by the GI Bill but taketh away by states that discriminated against nonwhites and other minorities, never mind female veterans. When does Larry King's old guest Randi Rhodes get her Air Force benefits for her six years there?
Amber Ruffin covered how once-successful black towns became lakes, not just destroyed like Rosewood or Black Wall Street in Tulsa in the Roaring Twenties, because capitalism, American Psycho style?
Willie Sutton said he robbed banks because that's where the money was, not Al Capone.
Howard Schultz was a CEO of Starbucks coffee, but not among its founders in 1971.
Trump's The Apprentice was among the wave of reality shows, some good like The Amazing Race, that punished scriptwriters for demanding DVD residuals. Maybe if that had been normalized earlier, like for actors in reruns, Trump would have continued to self-cannibalize his brand, unimpeded in his courthouse appointment with Lisa Bloom on 11-23-2016 to discuss his child rape charges? At least the backlash gave us story arc shows like Lost, Alias, and the new Doctor Who plus Battlestar Galactica.
See also, Gasping for Air about the failure of local radio and television to serve local communities, not just local newspapers, Left of the Dial about Al Franken headlining other comedians and radio professionals in the 2004 election cycle, Prelude about 1930's American fascism, and Too Much and Never Enough about how America's worst businessman became its worst boss, with a lot of help from foreign haters of democracy.
But at least we can hope to be the next Apprentice? Maybe with a Norwegian education and debt-free college like Kevin O'Leary, if he is not too busy asking me for $1000 in real estate investment like in 2019 at the Miami Beach FL Jackie Gleason Theater.

It’s OK to be angry about capitalism. Reflecting on our turbulent times, Senator Bernie Sanders takes on the billionaire class and speaks blunt truths about our country’s failure to address the destructive nature of a system that is fueled by uncontrolled greed and rigidly committed to prioritizing corporate profits over the needs of ordinary Americans.

In some ways, you should not watch the movie first. The narrator does a good job honoring the several voices, especially John Hurt. There are some differences from the movie; good.

Historia
An unabridged reading of the brand-new novel based on a storyline by Douglas Adams. The Doctor promised Romana the end of the universe, so she's less than impressed when what she gets is a cricket match. But then the award ceremony is interrupted by 11 figures in white uniforms and peaked skull helmets wielding bat-shaped weapons that fire lethal bolts of light into the screaming crowd. The Krikkitmen are back.

Doctor Who Versus Hitchhiker's Guide 3
Revisado: 12-29-23
There are some winks at old nemeses like The Black Guardian and Shada, but this is Doctor Who, Romana, and K-9 versus the horrifyingly genocidal Krikkitmen that Arthur Dent originally fought in his third book. Dent's influence is prevalent in references to paperwork and the BBC. The bonus is how the Krikkitmen are part of a larger scheme.

Her quirky style, jumping from young Lafayette to old Lafayette to 2000 and 2013 disrupts the usual monotony.
Good stuff to read before watching LAFAYETTE: THE LOST HERO on PBS.
Note ties to Charleston, the Hanoverian dynasty, Cotton Mather, and of course Ben Franklin in the book REPUBLIC OF PIRATES.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

An excellent prequel to the French and Indian War.
Revisado: 06-25-16
My only complaint is the failure to contrast fact from fantasy. No mention that Jolly Roger is a mistranslation of rouge as in French for red, or the actually low murder rate by pirates like Blackbeard compared to myths like TREASURE ISLAND. Still, well done.

Peter Capaldi, as The Twelfth Doctor, is hard enough to handle. The many characters, including Bernice's gang and rivals, we're worthy of Sophie Devereaux! Bonus points for mentioning Cinder, The War Doctor's Companion.
