The Darkness Outside Us wrecked me in the best possible way. I came for the sci-fi and clever premise… and ended up ugly-laughing, heart-clutching, and feeling things I absolutely did not expect from a space survival story.

This book is so much more than its concept. The characters are so well drawn—flawed, vulnerable, sharp, and funny. They felt real in a way that made every emotional moment hit hard, whether it was the aching loneliness of space, the quiet intimacy of connection, or the sharp jabs of humor that made me laugh out loud mid-chapter. It’s a true roller coaster: fear, despair, hope, joy, repeat. And I loved every second of it.

What makes it even more special is the queer representation. It’s such a breath of fresh air to see LGBTQ+ characters not just surviving, but thriving—falling in love, making terrible jokes, being messy and beautiful—in the future. Not historical trauma. Not coming-out narratives. Just queer people being fully alive in space, with all the trials and tenderness that come with it. I hope stories like this open hearts and build empathy, because this love story deserves to be seen.

Also—let’s be honest—there’s a little bit of spice here too. Not over-the-top or overly sexual, just the kind of slow-burn, emotionally charged tension that makes you ache for the moment they finally figure it all out. It’s more love than lust, and it’s so satisfying.

James Fouhey’s narration is stellar—nuanced, emotional, and fully immersive. He brings each character to life in a way that makes the audiobook feel like a cinematic experience. I still hear their voices echoing in my head.

I didn’t know a queer space romance could leave me feeling this seen, this inspired, and this emotionally invested—but here we are. Five glowing stars across the galaxy.

“The Brightness Between Us” is a sequel that not only meets but surpasses the brilliance of its predecessor, “The Darkness Outside Us.” Eliot Schrefer masterfully continues the saga, delivering a narrative rich with unexpected twists and profound emotional depth. The plot is unpredictable, keeping readers engaged as it navigates through intense moments of joy, despair, and hope. Each character, from main to minor, is meticulously crafted, adding layers of complexity and significance to the story. The novel’s exploration of humanity, intimacy, and survival resonates deeply, leaving a lasting impression.

James Fouhey’s narration elevates the audiobook experience. His authentic portrayal of diverse accents and cultural backgrounds brings the characters to life, immersing listeners in the story. While some accents may pose a slight challenge, they underscore the authenticity of the narrative. Fouhey’s performance ensures that the voices of the characters linger, making the conclusion of the book feel like a poignant farewell.

“The Brightness Between Us” is a beautifully crafted novel with an inspiring message, further enhanced by Fouhey’s compelling narration. It’s a journey that captivates the heart and mind, leaving an indelible mark on the listener.
