Historia
Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook. As a lone portal back to the living for traumatized spirits, Rita is terrorized by nagging ghosts who won’t let her sleep and who sabotage her personal life.

Interesting. Unique perspective.

An easy listen. Pretty interesting twist overall. Bought on a whim after hearing end of interview with author. Didn’t know what to expect but was quite enjoyable.

Historia
As a member of the strictly religious Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism, Deborah Feldman grew up under a code of relentlessly enforced customs governing everything from what she could wear and to whom she could speak to what she was allowed to read. Yet in spite of her repressive upbringing, Deborah grew into an independent-minded young woman whose stolen moments reading about the empowered literary characters of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott helped her to imagine an alternative way of life among the skyscrapers of Manhattan.

Illuminating and compelling story
Revisado: 04-09-21
I’ve been reading books based in different cultures and found this one to be interesting and well told. It isn’t written in a mean-spirited tone, despite the author’s critical view and ultimate rejection of the culture.
It is even more interesting if you know New York a little because it is really hard to grasp that such an insular community can exist a few subway stops from Wall Street. I was only in the Williamsburg neighborhood once and it was in fact like stepping onto a movie set.
What makes the book thought provoking is that I believe parents have a right to raise their children with traditions and religious beliefs of their choosing, but objectively, you are introduced to an overtly male-dominated and controlling society which from an outsider’s perspective is easily seen as at least coercive and potentially abusive. Balancing that, you have fathers, mothers, sisters and aunts who willingly train their daughters for the same life, so you have to believe many if not all are sincere in their beliefs that the spiritual rewards are what’s best for their children.

Historia
Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers — and two very dangerous men — came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke’s world.

A departure for Grisham. Ok but slow.
Revisado: 11-08-19
This is not a courtroom thriller or anything like Grisham has written that I’m aware of. It’s a decent but slow story of Arkansas cotton farmers. Be sure you understand what you’re buying.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-08-19
The performance was good through most of the story, and there are interesting characters developed to a point. But then nothing really comes of it. I guess any examination of a family’s inner workings can be interesting, and for me, I was interested in learning a bit about a family with a different culture than mine. And I did learn a little in that regard. But there isn’t enough there to sustain it. I thought the final part, read from another perspective was just rambling regrets of a father, and not believable for the character we spent much of the book with.
I would skip it.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

Very enjoyably read/listen.

Any additional comments?
Enjoyable characters and story. A little history and French cuisine/wine knowledge mixed in. Made me want to listen to more Bruno stories (and I have enjoyed them also).
