Fascinating telling of the story of the earth and it's people.
Revisado: 08-04-24
This book covers a lot and gives a good overview of how the earth came to be, how life originated, how man evolved and spread about this planet.

Historia
One of the nation’s top art critics shows how six great artists made old age a time of triumph by producing some of the greatest work of their long careers—and, in some cases, changing the course of art history. Though these six artists differed in many respects, they shared one thing: a determination to go on creating, driven not by the bounding energies of youth but by the ticking clock that would inspire them to produce some of their greatest masterpieces.

An interesting listen but not as enlightening as I hoped.

Good short biographies of these six artists but I expected more analysis about how these artists thrived in the late period of their lives.

Historia
In Breakfast with Seneca, philosopher David Fideler mines Seneca's classic works in a series of focused chapters, clearly explaining Seneca's ideas without oversimplifying them. Best enjoyed as a daily ritual, like an energizing cup of coffee, Seneca's wisdom provides us with a steady stream of time-tested advice about the human condition - which, as it turns out, hasn't changed much over the past 2,000 years.

This book was well written and narrated, and contained lots of useful ideas to think about for living a good life. I plan to come back to this one for a re-read in the future.

Historia
First published in 1958, a year after On the Road put the Beat Generation on the map, The Dharma Bums stands as one of Jack Kerouac's most powerful and influential novels. The story focuses on two ebullient young Americans - mountaineer, poet, and Zen Buddhist Japhy Ryder, and Ray Smith, a zestful, innocent writer - whose quest for Truth leads them on a heroic odyssey, from marathon parties and poetry jam sessions in San Francisco's Bohemia to solitude and mountain climbing in the High Sierras.

This was my first exposure to Kerouac's writing (though I'd known the name seemingly forever) and I am now looking forward to reading more of his work.
The narration of this audio book was superb.

Historia
It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life.

The Mountain Shadow is a very worthy sequel to Shantaram (but I expect it would be equally as enjoyable without having experienced the first book).

In Montparnasse begins on the eve of the First World War and ends with the 1936 unveiling of Dalí’s Lobster Telephone. As those extraordinary years unfolded, the Surrealists found ever more innovative ways of exploring the interior life, and asking new questions about how to define art. In Montparnasse recounts how this artistic revolution came to be amidst the salons and cafés of that vibrant neighborhood.

This was a very interesting look into the birth and development of Surrealism in Paris.
I am not one to usually notice or comment on the narration but at times in this audio book I was distracted by what I would consider unnatural pausing/ phrasing in the reading.

Worthy of a second read?
Revisado: 11-23-23
This book was more about quantum particle physics than just about fantastic numbers. It is a challenging subject on which I've read a few books but none that have satisfactorily enlightened me. This book might be the one might be the one, but I will need a second, more thoughtful read, to know for sure.

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Revisado: 04-16-23
It has the feel of a grand/epic novel that I should love. Unfortunately I struggled to keep the characters straight (there were a lot of similar sounding names) and nearly gave up on the book a few times. I need to re-read/listen with greater focus.
