Historia
Martin Lorensen is a twenty-three-year-old counselor for disturbed teenagers. He’s bright, compassionate, attractive, and outgoing. He’s also—and this is the most interesting thing—not dead. Martin has improbably survived not one but two deadly disasters that claimed dozens of lives. The kid is riding one hell of a lucky streak. Two federal agents think there is something darker at play. Now that they’ve arranged to interview Martin, they want answers. Martin is ready to share everything he knows. One thing is for certain: when it comes to escaping death, luck doesn’t figure into it at all.

just ok
Revisado: 04-09-25
The reasons for the police to have him as a suspect, much less in questioning, seemed very flimsy and hard to justify. It's not like they were X-File investigators, they were normal police . Suddenly inserting a BLM lecture felt awkward and out of place for the story.

Historia
Newly-minted child psychologist Mina has little experience. In a field where the first people called are experts, she’s been unable to get her feet wet. Instead, she aimlessly spends her days stuck in the stifling heat wave sweeping across Britain, and anxiously contemplating her upcoming marriage to careful, precise researcher Oscar. The only reprieve from her small, close world is attending the local bereavement group to mourn her brother’s death from years ago. That is, until she meets journalist Sam Hunter at the grief group one day. And he has a proposition for her.

it was ok

it was just fair. The main character wasn't very likable. She was extremely insecure and wishy washy. The reporter was a shell of a character. Barely any development.

Historia
Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted. I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark.

the narrator sounds like a man so it was very hard to get into the story when it was supposed to be a woman
Revisado: 04-12-24
The narrator's Voice ruined the experience of the story for me. I went into it not knowing what to expect because I had heard you could listen to these books and any order a standalone stories. so when the opening scene was being described and they got to the park about wishing to be a mother I was so confused. the narrator 100% sounds like a man and I did not understand they were speaking as a woman

When the rules turn deadly, winning is everything. Only available from Audible, a gripping psychological thriller from the author of Silent Child, Saving April, and The Broken Ones. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Lisa Jewell and Paula Hawkins. The perfect couple. The perfect marriage. The perfect game. Effie and Ben May have everything. Success. Beauty. Glamour. But beneath the charming smiles and expensive clothes, a twisted game is in progress. A game for which only they know the rules.

unlikable charachters
Revisado: 02-02-24
I don't understand the rave reviews. it was just an ok story. Manipulated people who aren't very likable so you just really don't care about anyone. The ones who are somewhat ok seem mindless and make illogical decisions. Not much depth or detail, just surface value insights and very little to become invested in. I finished it only because I was driving and had no decent radio signal.

Pastor Alexis is annoying
Revisado: 12-13-23
Pastor Alexis was annoying and her sermons weren't anything special. I don't understand all the gushing over her by the other characters.
The cutting self harm lesbian who only was allowed to borrow her friends card if she "boned" the pastor was a ridiculous running commentary.
Last straw was when Pastor Alexis whined she should get laid and the brotherstopped snoring and puped up and agreed. I was done with this stupid story.

Historia
Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband's shadow. He controls her every move - what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she's allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are...consequences. And he has all the power. To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she's allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script.

Decent story but with unnecessary sexualization
Revisado: 09-28-23
I liked the overall revenge story despite it being outrageously unbelievable, but the sexual references regarding her lesbian escapades with her best friend (which was initially portrayed as platonic friendship) and allusions to 3 ways felt totally shoehorned into the story. It was like some horny 13 year old boy was fantasizing about slumber party porn plots and slipped the paragraphs into the book unnoticed. Her sexual desires came up at inappropriate and unrealistic times. The descriptions really didn't add anything to the story that wasn't already enough without them. I'm not a prude but at the same time I don't really like when something, in an attempt to be "edgy", is injected for no purpose. These intersections felt forced and inconsistent with the character's actions outside these scenes. It jolts the listener out of the story with its abrupt change in pace and overall tone.

The evil white man
Revisado: 09-18-23
Whoever wrote this story needs therapy to deal with a severe inferiority complex over their skin color. The main characters view everything through a lense of what they must imagine is a world of nothing but racist white people thinking badly about them and plotting how to hold them down 24/7. The constant reminder they were black coupled with every interaction with a white person involved them being guilty of microagressions and prejudices got tedious quickly. Totally over the top. Says more about the author's racist beliefs rather than the other way around. This could have been a good story if it wasn't so blatantly beating the listener over the head with exaggeration.
I rated this 1 star for story and 3 fir performance. 2 overall. The app incorrectly shows 5 stars.

silly
Revisado: 11-11-22
The family secret, the pitchfork mob neighbors, the timing of the revealed secret...in the midst of a criminal investigation, the "twist" villian...it was all just so cheesy. A very bad LMN television plot. I actually was laughing at some points because of the ridiculously outrageous scenarios and actions of the characters. Just plain silliness.

King as a narrator is TORTURE to listen to.
Revisado: 06-11-21
The story was ok. Not one of my favorites...I think the perversion of the husband was a bit overboard, even for King. Norman's internal dialogue is not very realistic. The cursing sounds ridiculously juvenile with the excessive vulgarness. There's no way someone functions in normal society, much less excel as a police officer, with that sort of childish mind.
I almost quit listening due to King's narrating. His nasally voice is just awful. I couldn't take it. I had to fast forward almost half of Norman's parts just to escape the sound of his incessant droning, stuffy nose, echoing speech. I will not buy any other books he narrates. Mystery as to why nobody in his professional or personal inner circle has the guts to tell him how badly he sounds.
