Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes: Gripping story, with complex, imperfect characters.

What other book might you compare This Dark Road to Mercy to and why?

A land more kind than home, Mr. Cash's first book: A book about failed fatherhood told from multiple first person narrators.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The female reader for the female protagonist lends nice tone and subtlety.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nope.

Any additional comments?

Nice work again from Mr. Cash. A very fine book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The content in this book is fascinating, so yes.

What other book might you compare The Sports Gene to and why?

Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers." Both offer opinions on success.

What didn’t you like about David Epstein’s performance?

His attempts to read in accents (German, Australian, French, etc) and gender tones (female) are a fucking embarrassment. They remind me of a fifth grader in a drama class. The German accent sounds like something out of Dr. Strangelove.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The hypothesis regarding increased fast twitch muscle content in West African sprinters. Utterly fascinating.

Any additional comments?

Still worth it, just get a different reader OR don't attempt accents.

No, it is what I expected. Nice anecdotes.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Not a story. Not applicable.

Slightly nasal voice. No big deal.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Would you listen to The Yellow Birds again? Why?

I never listen to books twice

Who was your favorite character and why?

The narrator, he was honest and deep thinking.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene in the German bar.

Who was the most memorable character of The Yellow Birds and why?

Again, the narrator.

Any additional comments?

Reads like poetry without the self-indulgence. One of the most evocative books I've ever read.

What did you love best about American Rust?

Gritty narrative, excellent depiction of cultural demise.

What did you like best about this story?

The way relatively good people find themselves severely compromised.

Which character – as performed by Tom Stechschulte – was your favorite?

Billy Poe.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Some passages were worth mulling over.

Any additional comments?

A lot of passive verbs. Whatever, I don't write that well...

Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret History to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Secret History?

Henry's description of the bacchanal.

What aspect of Donna Tartt’s performance would you have changed?

Nothing, she reads well. Maybe a bit self-indulgent on sensory description, but hey, she's the boss.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Any additional comments?

There are a few mistakes which stand out like bad service in a three star restaurant. No eighteen year old heterosexual male from the California badlands can identify the smell of bergamot, no matter how sensitive he is. No ex-footbal player, described as "jowly," and standing six foot three, would weight 190 pounds - more like 290. 6-3 and 190 is Mike Phelps, i.e. lanky. And no young straight male EVER fantasizes about kissing a woman's hairline, again no matter how sensitive...
