I struggled at first and had to keep rewinding because I lost focus. I considered DNFing it but I’m glad I stuck it out.

Good story and solid narration
Revisado: 11-03-23
Well written story and outstanding narration by Zach Villa. Enjoyed this one a lot. Hope the rest of the series is as good but disappointed Zach doesn’t narrate all of them.

Historia
Running offers much more than road racing! After a decade of writing about running, sports columnist Susan Lacke found herself in a serious running rut. The runners around her seemed to be thriving, setting goals, and having fun, but her own interest in running was lackluster. Seeking to reengage with the sport she once loved, Lacke spent a year exploring running in its many shapes and forms, taking on running challenges that scared her, pushed her, and downright embarrassed her.

Revisado: 10-19-23
This was exactly what I needed to help me get out of my funk after also moving away from all my running friends and missing that comraderie. Listened to it over the course of a new runs. Thank you for sharing your year outside your comfort zone!

Historia
When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds. The weather didn’t bother her. In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day. But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew and loved, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and found a reason to race.

Fascinating but alcohol-heavy

Fascinated me but very alcoholic beverage heavy - especially for a non-drinker like me.

Historia
Beginning in the spring of 1969, Huckleberry Finn inspired a question: Could you build a raft, float down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, and on the way learn something about America and its peoples? Will Bagley, a vagrant longhair and future prize-winning western historian, and his friends could, and did. Now, a half century after the adventure, Bagley tells his story.

Loved going on this Mississippi River adventure
Revisado: 08-14-20
Picked this one up on audible on a whim after signing up for a Mississippi River virtual running challenge (these running challenges are about the only thing keeping me going during COVID). My typical reading genres are running, through-hiking, and self-help but as I fell in love with this book, I realized this was through-hiking but in a boat on a river.
Will Bagley is an amazing writer. He's able to describe the scene so you feel like you're there with him without being superfluous. The honesty in his self-reflection is refreshing.
This is a book I'll definitely be revisiting in the future. I kept wondering if there were photographs if I purchased a hard copy - I'd love to see a lot of the things he described at the time he experienced them.
I love when authors narrate their own books. The sound volume was a little inconsistent but it wasn't a big deal - I just turned my headphones up or down on my run.

Historia
When Bernie Sanders began his race for the presidency, it was considered by the political establishment and the media to be a "fringe" campaign, something not to be taken seriously. After all, he was just an independent senator from a small state with little name recognition. His campaign had no money, no political organization, and it was taking on the entire Democratic Party establishment. By the time Sanders' campaign came to a close, however, it was clear that the pundits had gotten it wrong.

This book spoke to my heart and soul. I'm still grieving his loss to Hillary.
Would have given it a solid 5 stars across the board had Bernie narrated the entire thing but, admittedly, the inclusion of live audio of his speeches definitely made up for my disappointment.
