Geoffrey Berman was honored to be tapped for the job by Donald Trump in 2018. The manner in which Trump had dispatched his predecessor Preet Bharara was troubling, but the institution was fabled for its independence. Surely he could manage.

This is one of the best and most important books I have read in decades. It ranks up there with Woodward and Bernstein’s book revealing the political machinations of the Nixon Administration. Thank you for standing up to Bully Barr and Donald Thug.

Timely truth

The past decade in the United States has seen far too much demonization of immigrants and religious and ethnic groups. Some current politicians use the same hate-filled rhetoric used by Hitler to gain support. I can’t imagine we could ever travel all the way down the road Hitler’s Germany traveled, but even one step down that road is too far. Teaching the truth about that horrible past is the best way to make sure we don’t move any further in that direction than we already have.

More than any other narration I’ve Hanks sounds like he’s telling his own story in person, and not reading a book. He’s superb and this book is worth listening to just for his performance. But the story is superb as well. The author developed the characters so well I felt like I knew them.

The history of the “Spanish Flu” is fascinating, but this book repeats itself too often and often gets bogged down in tedious details. I learned a lot but can’t say I enjoyed it.

Would you listen to Debt of Honor again? Why?
No. The story is OK, but the performance by the narrator sounds like some automaton. At times I wondered if it was a human reading it, or electronic.
What didn’t you like about John MacDonald’s performance?
His voice is monotone and sounds like it's made by a machine. Horrible inflection. No emotion.
