Probably the Best High Republic Book

I haven't enjoyed a lot of the High Republic books, but this one does stand out. It focuses on a small enough group of characters to paint a more in depth picture of them, but there's enough action to make it feel similar to the older books set in the Clone Wars. The sound effects and voice acting make it feel like listening to a radio drama.

Feels similar to books set around Episode I

This one was pretty decent. It reminded me of the books that came out around Episode I, with some memorable characters, good action sequences, and a plot centered around the Jedi going on missions as peacekeepers.

I thought it fell a little short of the mark with the ending, but still enjoyable enough. There are very few Star Wars books that have truly memorable or clever endings, so I wouldn't hold that against it. Still good enough to be one of the better High Republic books, along with the ones by Justina Ireland.

One of the better-written SW stories

Kemp has a way of painting a picture with his words, capturing the emotion and magnitude of situations with poetic metaphors that reminds me a little of Stephen King's writing style. Characters are given meaningful backstories and motivations that make you care about them--something that newer Star Wars books tend to skimp on. Overall, this makes Deceived rise above the usual fun fluff of most Star Wars stories. It would be worth reading even if it wasn't set in a certain galaxy far, far away.

My only complaint is that it's too short. The story mostly boils down to a handful of action scenes which, while done in an artistic and vivid style, feel like they should've been just one or two subplots of a bigger story. That part is common to Star Wars books, since they tend to feel like episodic adventures that form a more complex story arc over several books instead of being self-contained. Still satisfying though.

The first new Star Wars book I've enjoyed in a bit

I've read all the new books since Disney took over (including the new Thrawn books, the rest of the High Republic, and others), and this is the first one that felt like one of the older Legends books. Ireland does a good job making characters memorable, from vivid descriptions to their mannerisms and personalities. She also sets the scenes pretty well and has some good action sequences, which are both essential to make it an enjoyable adventure.

A lot of the other new books feel like the characters are just a list of names with no substance behind them that drift through storylines where nothing really happens. This one was a breath of fresh air.

Worthy Successor to Jedi Apprentice series

While it's short and not too complicated, it introduces some memorable characters and creative settings. It reads like the first episode of a TV series and reminds me of the old Jedi Apprentice books I read when I was a kid, but is still enjoyable enough for readers of all ages.

Doesn't quite live up to the original Thrawn books

The original Thrawn trilogy is a tough act to follow, but this one is more like all the new ones where his tactical tricks rely on a random techno-babble explanation that gets pulled out of thin air. Nothing much happens until the last couple chapters, and that felt like it came out of nowhere too just because it was time to wrap up the story.

The narrator does a decent job, but his decision to give most of the Chiss western accents is a little distracting. I suppose it's meant to be because they're on the frontier of the Chiss Ascendancy, and western accents have been used as an Outer Rim accent before. But having a bunch of Chiss that sound like Sam Elliott just takes you out of it.

Not quite as good as unabridged

It's not the same as the unabridged version, but it's a nostalgic refresher if you read the full book and want to revisit the cliffnotes. The narrator isn't bad but doesn't do as good a job mimicking the original actors' voices as more recent audio books, and they hadn't settled on a consistent pronunciation of planets at that time.

Enjoyable standard vampire story

This story borrows a lot of elements and plot points from the story of Dracula, but it's different enough that it's still enjoyable. And it sets up well for future books that would take the story in new directions. The writing style is also pretty good. If you feel like reading a vampire story with a little action in it, this hits the spot.

This was an interesting start to a series that makes me curious to read more. It does a very good job with the details of being in a mercenary army.

Better than other Disney SW books

I don't think any Star Wars books since Disney took over have been very good, so the bar is not high. But I do think this is the best one so far, and the time period it's set in has a lot of potential. There's a dystopian, wild west feel to parts of it that feels a little similar to Mad Max at times, which isn't something I've seen done in a SW book before. One character feels a little too similar to Kylo Ren though.
