Priceless was... Wow. Seriously. I know I'm hooked on this series (yes, that's a testament to the author's writing skills) and I'm kinda binge-ing them (I'm reading them as fast as my own schedule allows me), and thus, with how things ended in Altercation, I was more than ready to start this one. I mean, jumping forward a couple of years, yet knowing Jaci is going to be dealing with some new issues had me picking it up as fast as I could. It was interesting seeing what has happened in her life after returning home. How it all has affected her family, her friendship with Amanda (in a good way, at least at first), but also how things have been going at school (how she's still in the track team but also how closed off she's become). This all changes when the school's QB gets to be her science project partner along with all the mystery surrounding the notes Jaci begins receiving (as well as all the secrecy and lies because of them). Things definitely escalate, and I was definitely getting back to the story as soon as I could so as to see how it'd all play out. I should have seen the love triangle from the blurb, but in a way, it didn't surprise me that much, especially considering how book 2 ended. It's not my favorite trope, and as always, it gets messy, but I guess it played well with the story. The only thing that did manage to pull me out of the story was the Spanish typos. I've said it in a different review, but I think it bears repeating: authors, it never hurts to have an extra set of eyes on your work, but especially so if you're writing in another language (even if they're just a few phrases). So please, reach out to the Spanish-speaking people in your life (I'm sure you can find some among your readers/fans as well). I'm positive you'll make their day, and they'll be glad to help you. ;)

I was honestly on the fence about starting this one since I had the audiobook version and didn't know how different the experience would be from having read the first two books in the series, but I've gotta say, the narrator did a great job! She has a really smooth voice, and I loved the ones she gave to each of the characters, especially Jaci and Amanda, as well as the guys in the story. I think the only improvement I could suggest would be regarding the Spanish pronunciation (the couple of times it happened pulled me out of the story). But other than that, her performance of the different emotions and nuances was pulled off pretty well.

Overall, a nice addition to this pulse-pounding reading experience, made even better by its narrator. Perfect for fans of the author, the Perilous series, love triangles, (slightly) romantic suspense, and/or psychological thriller genre. I'll probably take a breather before starting the next one. ~ 4 stars

Content:
Sex: none. Passionate kisses only. One make-out scene. A teenager wonders if that will lead to more, but it gets stopped in time. Another teenager does have sex with her boyfriend/ex. Talk about a pregnancy test.
Violence: mostly the threats in different forms (notes, cards, text, and video messages). Fist fights, being chased by a car, broken car window, someone being shot and dying because of it.
Other: (slight) use of heroin.

The Cowboy's Fairytale is the obvious retelling of the Cinderella story with Jessie's own take on it, and what a take it is! There's certainly "Cinderella", aka Nell, "the Prince", aka Ryker, as well as the evil sisters (readers will especially love to hate one of them). I liked their meet-cute, and how the reader gets to see his compassionate nature and willingness to help from the start. The romance is the author's usual brand of slow-burn sizzling sweet, but their first kiss is well worth the wait. I liked Nell's kind disposition, her outlook on life and her choice to remain happy no matter what life threw at her, as well as her fierce love for her brother. I also enjoyed Ryker's growth throughout the story, learning the ropes of being a foreman and not being afraid of hard work. I think either I didn't get the explanation behind the shoes or it could have been explained better. Oh, and that ending was equal parts nail-biting and pretty much unexpected.

Jay did his usual great job, just as he's been doing so far in the series, bringing all the characters to life and pulling off both sophisticated adults, ranchers, as well as children. His including some of the laughs or sighs when a character is talking definitely made for a better experience.

A nice continuation to the Sweet Water Ranch series, perfect for lovers of Sweet Romance, Jessie Gussman, Jay Dyess as a narrator, and/or Contemporary fairytale retellings. I can't wait to read "Preacher"/Clay's story. ~ 4 stars

a good sequel to the Juniper series

Juniper Limits presents the topics of domestic abuse, violence, and addiction in an honest yet thoughtful, through the lens of a couple of teenagers (let's keep in mind this is a YA). I had been intrigued by Cecilia's character from Fay's story, and thus knew what her family dealt with on a daily basis, but I was definitely looking forward to watching how her relationship with Paul would play out since we had seen the possible beginnings of it in The Edge of Juniper. Still, I was dragging my feet with starting this one since out of the two cousins, Cecilia was the one more sexually experienced, and I'm not into books for that kind of content. And thus, while her first make-out session in this book has her starting to go down that route, I'm very glad about how Paul dealt with that situation. Neither of them is perfect, but they're certainly perfect for each other, and I really enjoyed how they were able to help each other through each other situations throughout the book. I definitely enjoyed getting to know more of Abe's character as well, and am kinda looking forward to his story.

The narrator was good with both female and male voices, and I liked the ones for Paul, Abe, and Cecilia. Of course, with her being the same for the whole series, it was great catching up with past characters like Malcolm and Fay. Her performance was well done, and she really brought to life all the different emotions and teenage angst going on.

Overall, a good sequel to the Juniper series that definitely deals with some heavy issues in an honest way yet respectful way, coupled with a Sweet Romance YA story. ~ 4 stars

Content:
Sex: none on-screen, but it may or may not have been alluded to towards the end. There are passionate kisses and (at least one, tops two) making out scenes. In one of these, she grabs his hand and places it on her breast, thinking that's where he wants things to go/happen, but he stops her and they talk about it instead.
Violence: yes, since it deals with the topics of alcoholism and domestic abuse (father punches his son in the mouth, breaks some glass vases, etc). Also, a mother deals with addiction and there's a scene that shows her being high and the effects of it.
Language: yes, though I think less than the first one. Some sh*ts, d*mns.

It was beautiful!!

It's been a while since a story made me wonder why I hadn't started it sooner, but Fierce Heart definitely made me do it. Seriously, why, self? It was beautiful!! And don't you love it when a title fits so perfectly its story? *the happiest sigh*

Needless to say, I loved Essie (with her practical, no-nonsense way of seeing her role as a princess as one destined for a marriage alliance) and Farrendel (as the powerful yet wounded-in-more-ways-than-one Elven warrior) together, their getting to know each other, as well as their worlds, customs, and cultures. Their love story is beautiful and perfectly swoony (Ch. 21 is my favorite 😍), the descriptions were on point, and for this being the first book in a series, I liked the pace and "introduction" feeling to it. I'm definitely invested in the story, and I loved the action that was presented, as well as getting to understand Farrendel's background. Can't wait for the next one!

The narrator was fantastic, bringing to life not only Essie as the main character but also the whole elven court, as well as her family (however briefly they're featured). I loved the different voices, and I can't remember having issues with any of her inflections or nuances.

Overall, a great marriage of convenience story that I could have listened to in one sitting thanks to its lovely narrator, with characters from different cultures that find that what others perceived as weaknesses in them, are what makes them not only stronger and/or braver but also attractive to each other ;) ~ 5+ stars

The Cowboy's Reality Bride was both a sweet and fun listen. It was certainly interesting to have the author be her own narrator, but I think she did a great job. The different voices, as well as the inflections and such, were on point. My only advice would be to check the sentence that repeats itself in the middle of the book, and also that during Laney's getting to know Nancy for the first time, Nancy's voice didn't sound like what the listener had been used to till then. Other than that, the story was fantastic and I really appreciated and loved that despite this being a reality TV romance, it was also Christian Fiction, and thus their faith felt real in Laney and Tyler's lives and relationship. ~ 4.5 stars

Lawfully Justified is a fun and sweet story by Lorana Hoopes. I liked getting to know both Emma and William, and how they'd start to open up to the idea of love again, especially after they've both lost their respective spouses. The side characters are great and made for some interesting, fun, and even wise conversations. But what ultimately made me love this book was the message delivered by the pastor. It was convicting and helpful. //

As for the narrator, I think he did a good job with most of the voices, differentiating them, though it was a bit hard for me to tell apart Emma's younger siblings (Jenny and Benjamin). Also, some of the female voices didn't do it for me since they sounded too much like a man trying to do a woman's impression, but I guess that I ended up getting used to it. //

Overall, this is a book and an author I'd definitely recommend and read more of. ~ 4 stars

Liked the matchmaking site using exotic locations

Bree was an interesting read/listen. I really liked the concept of a matchmaking site using exotic locations for the matched couple to meet, and the author did great with the descriptions. I enjoyed this opposites-attract sweet romance, and how Bree and Jace decided to give their week a go despite admitting they weren't each other's types. However the mention of alcohol and such in the book bothered me. //

As for the narrator, I think she did a great job differentiating the voices of the characters, and I really liked Bree and Jace's, but pretty much every other character ended up with a high pitched or scratchy voice that messed with the overall experience. //

All in all, I think fans of the author and of sweet romance will enjoy this story and series. ~ 4 stars

Tessonja Odette delivers another epic adventure

I just finished listening to "Veil of Mist" and I have so many thoughts swirling in my mind. When I first started it, I kind of dreaded it thanks to the blurb announcing Teryn's faux de pas, but I think once I got over it (it wasn't as bad as I thought), I got so invested in the story some things stopped bothering me (like the fact I could stand only for so long Larylis' and Mareleau's voices). //

With this sequel, Tessonja Odette delivers another epic adventure with far greater and darker ramifications than the first. There's more danger and twists, the story delves more into some characters' pasts, it transports the readers to other realms and introduces new characters, all while leaving one with the question, will it end in a cliffhanger? //

As for the narrator, besides the aforementioned "but", I think she did a great job with the voices of all the characters both good and evil, as well as with the new ones and the foreign accents (though with English being my second language, it took me a bit to get used to the elven accent). I also think there was a "repetition" of sorts in one of the last chapters, but other than that, her performance was really good and definitely gives continuity to the series. ~ 4.5 stars

a sweet HS romance

Revisado: 08-25-20

I think it's been a while since I've read a YA book that focuses on your typical HS relations between the football and cheerleader teams, but Pass Me The Ball by Julie L. Spencer just did the trick for me. I think it was fun getting to know Jonnie, the only girl in the football team, as well as Skyler, the QB. I liked how they have been friends since they were little, as well as how in sync they are on the field. However, things start to change for Skyler after Jonnie's dramatic transformation over the summer into an actual... woman, and all the rest of the football team noticing it along with him. Of course, this is further complicated by the fact that Skyler already has a girlfriend (leader of the cheer squad), who also happens to be Jonnie's best friend, and you're already set with the perfect HS recipe for drama.

What actually surprised me was how the fallout actually happened, as well as the reactions of everyone involved (didn't see it coming). Still, it's got me interested in Amberlyn's story, which I think explains a bit more the reactions that I didn't see coming in this one.

On the other hand, I think the narrator did a good job of differentiating the voices of the characters, though, to be honest, it took me a few chapters to get used to Jonnie's pitch since it could be a bit similar to those of the guys. And speaking of them, it also was a bit hard for me to follow who was speaking when they were in a football practice since it felt like there were way too many names to keep straight. Of course, once I could keep track of each of the guys, things became easier and the book that much more enjoyable.

All in all, a sweet HS romance that is perfect for fans of both the genre and this author.~ 4 stars

Content (mild spoilers): a girl questions if her boyfriend is gay because he hasn't "made a move on her". There's some innuendo; a girl laughs because her boyfriend has to leave "early" (or earlier than intended) after they have been making out. And, overall, just based on how chill the parents were with the couple and/or how things were depicted so far in the book, one could easily assume the MCs will end up having sex in their future.

Love Me, Darling by Laura Burton is the last/fourth book on her Love Me series, but can be read as a standalone once you get used to all the names thrown at the beginning. I liked getting to know Lottie and Lucas, especially with a character like hers, where, due to personal reasons, she isn't a fan of Christmas. Of course, it's fun getting to see her thrown into all the activities surrounding the season, and finding out there are perks to certain traditions, such as the kiss under the mistletoe. However, since this is a novella, things happened rather quickly for me, and even though this is supposed to be compensated by the fact that they've known each since forever, I never fully got that impression.

As for the narrator, I have to give her points for adding the explanations, gasps, sighs, and so on from the different characters, since most of those are usually only mentioned in the narration. However, I think I'd have loved this book more if the voices between Lottie and Lucas, as well as other characters, would have been more clearly differentiated; also, I found it a bit jarring that a character's voice could change so much.

Overall, I think this a sweet romance and great addition that fans of the series and of Ms. Burton's writing will love to get their hands on.~ 3.5 stars

PS: It'd really help if the male on the cover (either the old or new) would have blond hair, just as the description in the book.
