Delightful
Revisado: 01-05-24
This was the first Anne McCaffery book I ever read, almost 40 years later it’s still absolutely delightful. I appreciate her beautiful writing, and her characters could leap right off the page, but the Firelizards are what keep me coming back. I still wish I could find a clutch and impress one of my own💗

Never enough
Revisado: 08-22-19
I have listened to this book over 6 times and it always delights, inspires, and entertains. Jim Dale is a marvel and perfectly narrates the story giving each character a distinct voice. Looking forward to listening to it again!

Historia
In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: There's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

Can I give it 6 stars?
Revisado: 09-11-18
I will be thinking about this book and recommending it for a long, long time. A fantastic read full of challenging ideas that are woven expertly through several story lines populated by well developed characters. Nuanced and thoughtful, a perfect antidote to hyperbolic partisanism and propaganda.

Historia
When she fell asleep, the world was doomed. When she awoke, it was dead. In the wake of a fever that decimated the earth's population - killing women and children and making childbirth deadly for the mother and infant - the midwife must pick her way through the bones of the world she once knew to find her place in this dangerous new one. Gone are the pillars of civilization. All that remains is power - and the strong who possess it.

Disgusting
Revisado: 03-07-18
This is the kind of garbage one writes when one has been poisoned by stories of “rape culture” and filled with man hating dogmas. This is not a nuanced view of what humanity might be like in the event of a population destroying plague, it’s the fears of a third wave feminist.

Historia
Stranger in a Strange Land is the epic saga of an earthling, Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with “psi” powers—telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others—and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a kind of messiah.

Painfully juvenile
Revisado: 10-12-17
I was genuinely groaning out loud in misery as I listened. If it hadn’t been a book club selection, I would never have finished it. The action is almost exclusively explained through stilted and repetitive dialog, and the plot seems nothing more than an attempt to justify orgies and non monogamous sex with anyone you like. The theology is self serving and shallow, in fact, I’d say shallow describes the book over all. The characters are so two dimensional and uncomplicated that they are a bore to spend time with, right up until they become kool-aid drinking cult members, then they are downright disturbing. I wanted to read the book because it has had a strong cultural influence, and now I find myself completely baffled that anyone could possibly find this juvenile and self righteously hedonistic swill persuasive.

Historia
The artifact is found seven miles below the surface of the sea and beneath 40 more feet of sand. The Navy's efforts to raise a wrecked submarine uncover it - and set in motion a scientific race to retrieve it, to discover just what it is and where it came from. Denser than any substance known to man, it has broken every drill bit they've tried on it and will not budge an inch. It resists every effort to breach it - or communicate with it.

Childish and unimaginative
Revisado: 04-09-12
What disappointed you about Camouflage?
The author fails from the beginning by never justifying the reason the aliens would need camouflage in the first place. On a primative earth, they could have survived very nicely without any disguise. More time is spent on trivial details then developing supposedly important relationships, and the aliens sexual awakening and preoccupation is laughable. If this book had been written in the 50s I would forgive its simplistic take of life on earth but I would never recomend this book.
What didn’t you like about Eric Michael Summerer’s performance?
Not sure he could have done anything to salvage this book, but his performance lacked drama.
