Historia
Quito Cruz might be a genius piano player and composer in New York City now but it doesn’t mean that he’s any closer to his Broadway dream. Although Quito knows what the problem is. Or rather who. Because ever since that night in college—with pretty-boy jock Emmett Aoki—his inspiration has been completely MIA . . . Now Quito’s dad wants him to put on a charity performance in his hometown. And there’s one hella big string attached: convince Emmett—now one of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities—to perform.

The narration is so charming
Revisado: 04-26-24
I loved the story even though it was super simple and rather predictable. It was fun, lighthearted at parts and then very emotional in others.

Historia
Faraway in a distant future, a desolate dirt planet is home to thousands of human clone soldiers fighting an endless war in fully-mechanized, armored atmosphere suits. Damage sustained to one soldier’s communication system during battle renders him invisible to his comrades. Unrecognizable without his communication chip, Angus is on his own.

Simple meditative story, engrossing
Revisado: 02-28-23
I really enjoyed this story. The narrative is meditative and easy to follow. It’s a story of death and awakening, a story of finding a way back to one’s self, a story of choosing life over endless suffering.
The title is a bit misleading. On a total rascal world far after the end of humanity on Earth as we know it, a human, Angus 7872, covered in a repaired and repaired again space suit begins to tap into memories of a long ago past because of irreparable damage to his radio antenna. The fact that oxygen is missing from the landscape is important insofar as the spacesuits the humans wear, but is inconsequential for Angus 7872’s journey inward - a journey towards freedom.

Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Historia
A dazzlingly accomplished debut collection explores the ties that bind parents and children, husbands and wives, lovers and friends to one another and to the places they call home. In “Who Will Greet You at Home”, a National Magazine Award finalist for The New Yorker, a woman desperate for a child weaves one out of hair, with unsettling results. In “Wild”, a disastrous night out shifts a teenager and her Nigerian cousin onto uneasy common ground. In "The Future Looks Good", three generations of women are haunted by the ghosts of war.

Amazing stories !!
Revisado: 06-07-20
I will definitely listen again. The stories explore the intersections of love and loss, grief and solace, choice and circumstance. If you're looking for a book with short stories that explore immigration, the effects of anti-Black racism, LGBTQ protagonists, magical realism, inter-generational relationships, fables, and class structures all through a lens of strong characters and deeply felt relationships, this is a must-read. Many thanks to Ms. Arimah for this beautiful collection. Many thanks to Levar Burton for introducing me to her stories.

Historia
In The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring - specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neuro feedback, mindfulness techniques, play, yoga, and other therapies.

Alt title: Trauma for White Comfort
Revisado: 05-27-20
The author intentionally ignores dealing with race and anti-blackness in his account of trauma - even though he leans heavily on sexual trauma women and girls face. He has plenty of opportunities to expound on the subject of societal and individual experiences of racism and how it affects everything - especially healing in clinical settings. I was very disappointed in his repeated decision to exclude such materials.

Continuing story of relationships
Revisado: 10-21-18
Good tale with lush background stories of people and places in this fantasy world. First person narrative offers at once an open and closed perspective of the world - Fitz's humility often comes into contact with his need to be a mentor and both conflict with his sense of morality and his black anger. A worthy read!
