Vivid, well written stories

It’s hard to imagine that these are the unpublished stories, presumably, not the best by Elmore Leonard. I thought they were unbelievably well crafted, and also well performed here.

Historia
Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac’s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be “beat” and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that “set them free”.

The book that changed the 20th century…
Revisado: 01-15-23
On the rRoad is an amazing novel, and this version of it actually enhances the experience! Will Pattin’s portrayal of seemingly innumerable characters is astounding. Naturally, Jack Kerouac‘s writing of the original rambling novel is impeccable. If ever, there were a work of literature that was seemingly transmitted into the artists’ mind, this is it.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Too much
Revisado: 08-23-21
I made the mistake of buying this and not reading it within the year. It just demolished the work of art that is The Iliad. It turned the classic epic into a dime store love story between the Achilles and Patroclus. I should’ve known better. I couldn’t finish it as it brought disappointment after disappointment. I hope Circe is better because I won’t be able to return that either. I’m bad about buying a lot of Audible’s offerings when on sale, but I need to stop and catch up on all that I have. It’s a tragedy (ha! See what I did there?) to be unable to return it, but it’s my own fault. And don’t be a hater… it’s not really a tragedy to be out a few bucks (forgive the hyperbolic, I just couldn’t pass it up.) However, all the 5 star reviews are the worst part, considering that others were really that taken with it. I blame our public education system for failing to teach the classics well. They are classics for a reason. If you’re a fan of Homer or even good literature, you won’t find satisfaction here.
