absolutely loved book 1 & 3. If you didn't like book 2, don't let it prevent you from getting to book 3!
Revisado: 02-21-25
I loved book one and I absolutely love book 3. If you were like me and had a harder time getting through book 2 ... I mean not that hard of a time it was still entertaining it was just much slower, but I wasn't just chomping at the bit trying to wait on a third book to be released. I listened to book one and 2 as they were released. So I guess I wasn't waiting on a third book to be released… and since I wasn't looking for it, I never saw it. Randomly came across it the other day, purchased it, started listening to it, and instantly fell in love. It's a great book! And the narrator is absolutely as good as they get.
Also, I usually listen to books at variable speeds. This book I listened to at 1.20-1.25x. That may or may not help anybody. But whatever nobody's gonna read this review, it will be at the bottom of the pile for a book released four years ago!

I'm feeling sad at the end of this series. That's how I know it was good. Still, I will miss all my friends in the pages

Amazing!
Revisado: 01-03-25
I have over 400 fantasy, science fiction and post apocalyptic books in my Audible library. For me this ranks right up with the top of them for entertainment. It's really well done. The story is great, plenty complex, and not overly predictable. I have very little experience listening to full cast audiobooks. Some of them I find distracting or cheesy. This one is grade A! I'm going back through the series for the second time (the first three books, as of the time of this writing). The first three books are definitely worth it. Cannot wait for the fourth !
I will say that I do have a friend who could "not get into it" after a "few hours" of listening to the first book. I advised him to speed up his listening speed to 1.2x, which sounds more natural.
It's really really good. That's all I have to say.

Historia
A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a place at the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. King Arthur died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table are left. The survivors aren’t the heroes of legend like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill.

Slow burn, but burns brightly
Revisado: 12-12-24
It takes about 1/3-1/2 of the narration time to really build momentum... but very much worth it. Anything you think is unexplained early on, eventually makes sense, so press on if you're bored at first.

Being an unwanted twin in the Imperial line of succession, Farilane became a scholar, adventurer, and in a time when reading was once more forbidden—a book hunter. Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.

My goodness. Just keep listening. Listen closely.
Revisado: 04-16-24
I tried starting this book at least three times. I thought it was drivel to publish something and make money. IT WAS NOT. IT IS ONE OF HIS BEST.
Before saying anything else, I will say this; I have read (listened to) ALL of MJS's novels in order of publication and I have found it to be oh so very rewarding listening to them in that order. The mysteries solved and unsolved unfold in a way that I couldn't fathom trying to do in chronological order. Please do it in publication order. It is truly reading/listening perfection if you do. I've read several hundred fantasy and sci-fi novels and MJS's ALL tie for the top 4 position out of them all. For a place of reference, to see if our tastes align, my other favorites (on audible) are: The Magician's Trilogy (Lev Grossman), The first three books of the Red Rising trilogy (Pearce Brown) and Sons of the Black Sword pentology (or whatever 5 books is called; by Larry Correa; spelling uncertain) If you like these, then read my review. If you don't, then our tastes differ and you can be on your way. I don't mind listening to a slow burn so long as the sum total of all the books reads out as a great and incredibly ling novel. In fact I think I prefer it. Anyway, on to the review of Farilane, Audible version...
Just when you think you know everything in this universe of Elan (i don't know how to spell anything from his books because I only have listened to them), you realize there are infinite histories that just keep being revealed.
I haven't cried this much since... I don't know. Since childhood. It is so well told. I've listened to every book MJS has written in this loooong and everly complex series, many, many, many times. I kept skipping this one because the start of it just turned me off for unknown reasons. The other day I was bored and tried it out again. I don't know what changed (maybe I was actually listening more closelythis time around). Perhaps it's the complete unfamiliarity with Farilane, or the fact that I knew she wasn't a knight and her title was forever known as "Princess", nothing more, that I thought her story to lack the magic or marshal lore that seems to go with the typical favored heroic characters in fantasy. Just listen/read on. I think MJS has written 20 novels now and this tops the list. Well, since I just listened to it I say that, but honestly they all make me laugh and cry more than almost any other novels. This one will surprise you in a lot of ways. I skipped it before going to Esrahaddon (spelling?) and it really didn't diminish EH from being 5 star AMAZING. But Farilane fills in a quite a few blanks I had after listening to EH. But I didn't even know the blanks existed until I came back to Farilane. Give it a long chance at first and listen closely. Once it gets into the adventure, you'll be locked to your headphones; and it only gets exponentially better from there. Narration is as good as it can possibly get. TJR is the best and most consistent reader throughout this series. It FEELS like he reads these books 10 times through and practices the script before finally recording. I don't even think of it as a single person speaking when he dialogues the many characters, male or female. It's so seamless and heartfelt, I get totally lost in the story. It is better than reading it myself, because all context and tone seems to be deeply understood by the narrator prior to saying it. In text form, I would personally have to read and re-read it to get some semblance of what he does, but it doesn't compare. Comparing books to television is a joke. The same is true for a book narrated by someone who just "gets it". Anyway... all of MJS's books are just incredible. Read them in order of publication. That's my advice

Top 10 book
Revisado: 02-05-20
To begin, and for reference, some of my favorite books:
The Magicians Trilogy - Lev Grossman
Red Rising series - Pierce Brown
Riyria series & Age/empire - Michael J Sullivan
Chronicles of Amber - R. Zelazny
Shades of Magic - VE Schwabb
The Quantum Magician - D. Kunsken
Etc. etc.
This book also tops my my list...
It’s an incredible dilogy or duology or whatever (2 book series, whatever the word for that is) and wish it wasn’t over! Also wish it was a better known series. The author and his works deserve to be heard so more work proliferates for my hungry ears (or eyes). Avid readers and audible-philes deserve to know it’s out there. Start with the first book. This is the sequel. I’m not even going to explain the book. If you like the above authors and books, then this is for you
