A wonderful continuation!
Revisado: 04-17-25
I love opposites attract so much, and Diem and Tallus’s dynamic has filled that space for me from book 1. The mystery was intriguing, with no shortage of twists and turns, and the B&B from hell had me cracking up every time 😂
Major kudos to Nick J Russo for another stellar performance! I’ve started waiting for the audiobooks to experience these books for the first time, because I’ve been conditioned to need his accompanying narration! I’m especially in awe of his voice for Diem - it embodies gruff Diem to a T. Highly recommend these for anyone looking to jump into this series!

This book is my happy place
Revisado: 02-12-25
In this never-before-seen contemporary romance from Sir Gregory Ashe, I felt all the butterflies, the flutters, the squeezing of my chest, the nerves of first times, the melting of my heart. And now, my dream of hearing Fer’s foul mouth in his voice has come true!
You may have already met Fer, Auggie’s big brother, in The First Quarto. I won’t deny understanding the lengths Fer has gone and will go for his family, no matter how low they stoop and how toxic they become, is integral to his character arc. That said, it’s not necessarily impossible to be up to speed (for the most part) with this book alone. You’ll see soon enough what he deals with on the daily, and my gosh, it’s truly too heavy a load for anyone to carry, let alone someone who’s kept the Lopez household afloat on his own two shoulders from as early as he can remember. So when unexpected guests enter his life and disrupt the fragile balance he’s only barely managed to maintain (if it could even be called that), he’s forced to make a choice he’s never dared to before.
I’ve loved this overprotective brutish hero of a guy since his first on-page cuss. His deep love for Auggie and desire to protect his youngest brother from the ugliness of their family touched me with an almost painful soreness. Their bond genuinely means the world to me. Greg’s ability to write a familial / platonic relationship like theirs in this manner stuns me to the core.
Oh, did I forget to mention it’s not only a contemporary romance, but one with A MANNY?!!!

It’s nearly Christmas, and Dashiell Dawson Dane already has enough on his plate: finding a present for his parents, coming up with excuses not to hang the Christmas lights, and finishing this stupid story he’s been writing (okay, maybe he needs to start writing it). On top of all that, Bobby has been acting…well, strange. The last thing Dash needs, in other words, is to play host when Marshall Crowe—celebrity author and, worse, a friend of Dash’s parents—comes to town.

What a cheeky ending!
Revisado: 02-01-25
This installment decided to play nice and take several steps back from the pain levels we’ve been regularly served, instead drawing more heavily on the fun potential of this seaside town’s comedic shenanigans and quirky occupants. In some ways, the smoother roads made the book go by much quicker in my eyes. But that doesn’t mean a lack of progress on the main fronts: new opportunities open up for other members of our Last Picks crew to shine, and communication earnestly begins to lay its foundations. It helps to know GA has plans for more robust Last Picks development in the second half of the series - for now, I’ll just be over here relishing how they support and wrangle our lovable, anxiety-ridden Dash (with so much love and exasperation!). But above all, I most enjoy watching Dash’s steady progression through his spiritual growth spurt as he hops about Hastings Rock and unravels more of himself - as a community member, as a writer, as a son, as a friend, and as a human being.

After several months (and a few murders), Dash is finally starting to feel at home in Hastings Rock. He’s enjoying the quiet after the end of tourist season, he’s comfortable at Hemlock House (the jury is still out on whether it’s haunted), and most importantly, he has friends.

The dooziest cozy to doozy so far
Revisado: 02-01-25
After the ending of that last book, I wasn't going to delude myself into thinking book número tres was going to take a gentle turn. But while frolicking through blooming meadows was immediately struck off the list, maybe - just maybe - it'd be akin to a light practice strike, one you might aim at a punching bag to get the body warmed up.
Little did I know, the tables would turn and I'd find myself getting absolutely pummeled instead. I left feeling like I'd just finished a clean 5k in emotional damage, and I approve. Subvert the genre. Make it yours. Life would be too predictable otherwise.
There is so much relationship angst laced in these pages: the suppressed wants and desires, the violent ebb and flow of awareness and tension. The purposeful shifts and switches in Dash's POV between "Deputy Bobby" and "Bobby." The fears and subtle testing of waters. Every look and action and word, whether spoken or unspoken, held so much in their invisible weight, and reaffirmed the lengths left to go before their truth can be realized. I guess I'll continue to exist indefinitely on the verge of bursting from the coiled strain of watching the play-by-play on the sidelines.
Dash should take a stab at writing romance. The poetry he was waxing could be turned into the most romantic of wistful odes, if he only gave himself the chance.
I couldn't possibly adore the progress of Dash's relationship with the town of Hastings Rock more. There's a scene with a certain owner that lit a toasty fire in this cold, barren heart of mine that then had me tearing up at a single line update a few chapters later. I love that he's truly carving out a place for himself after never having had his own space, and now surrounded by those who truly want the best for him. Indira was a standout in her compassion and heartwarming pastries, and Keme and Dash just share such aggressively sweet sibling energy. The Last Picks is my favorite motley crew of personalities, and I need them to stick together forever.

You can’t hide from the truth. And apparently, you can’t hide from your ex either. Dashiell Dawson Dane wants the simple things in life: to live in a (possibly) haunted mansion, to avoid socializing at all costs, and to write, and possibly finish, a book. Unfortunately, the real world has a way of intruding. And since unfinished manuscripts don’t pay the bills, he finds himself persuaded—against his better judgment—to rent out Hemlock House for a wedding. Having his ex-boyfriend, Hugo, arrive unexpectedly during the preparations is bad enough.

A favorite!
Revisado: 02-01-25
If that conclusion isn’t a hallmark of GA’s work, then I don’t know what is.
Friends, this totally blew the first book out of the water. GA seems to have found himself an even-keeled strut that pairs nicely with the genre, and I’d even say it highlighted the pacing stumbles in the previous book (which I completely understand as the first had to wear a multitude of hats to fit everything in such an unprecedentedly condensed form, and I’m more than willing to overlook those hiccups given the entertainment value). But truthfully, if I were to go back, I’d likely tweak my rating to represent just how much I loved this.
As any proud Ashochist would say, I enjoy my interpersonal conflicts, juicy relationship drama, the jealousy, the denial (yes, Dash, denial is not just a river in Egypt. Not when you’re as whipped as the whip cream on your favorite cakes), the meanderings and close calls (oh Bobby, you’ll find your way sooner than later) immensely - and I’m all for the deep, internal excavations of what factors brought Dash dashing to Hastings Rock in the first place.
So when the dirt is dredged up to the surface once the ex in question unexpectedly shows up in town? Strap me in.
It’s a huge relief to know that there are 12 books planned, because the subtly dropped Indira and Keme backstory hints were nowhere near enough to satisfy my curiosity. GA is having too much fun dangling multiple carrots that I’m just dying to sink my teeth into!

Revisado: 11-29-24
I continue to adore Joanna Chambers’ writing in this solid historical, but wow, the narrator really took this story beyond and amped up my enjoyment of the book! Admittedly I’m not a major fan of time traveling from chapter to chapter, from present to past and back again, but the phenomenal narrative performance made it work. My only wish is Iain had to undergo more groveling. Can’t wait to check out the next book!

Historia
It’s not a real case, he’s not my boyfriend, and we aren’t partners. Three lies I told myself for survival. After ten months of shamefully stalking and showing up randomly on Tallus’s doorstep at midnight (for reasons), the sinfully hot records clerk decided he’d had enough of my games. In fact, he went out of his way to bring me the most ridiculous case (it was not a case) on the planet as an excuse to push me over the line (he wanted a date). Our arrangement (hooking up) didn’t suit him any longer. Could I say no? Of course not (this was Tallus).

Book 3 when??
Revisado: 09-19-24
Big burly emotionally closed-off men getting disarmed by sassy, flirty personalities who have them wrapped around their finger is one kryptonite of many for me, it seems.
I am really enjoying this pair’s dynamic. The depth of Diem's fears and their roots in his (perceived, but also very valid) inability to reciprocate the way he believes Tallus deserves was heartbreaking to read about in further detail. Then there’s Tallus, welcoming and accepting with open arms every little tidbit he manages to wrangle out of the guy. He wants nothing more than for Diem to see himself the way Tallus sees him. It’s incredibly sweet. I also kinda love how their behaviors in isolation are complete red flags (Diem's stalking, Tallus's overassertiveness), and yet somehow work perfectly for them? There's rarely ever a clear-cut line for exactly how much to prompt or push someone out of their comfort zone, so to some extent, their actions can come across arguably overstepping/overbearing. The clear mutual yearning for what the other would offer if it were a perfect world without a single obstacle in sight made it sit right with me, but I appreciated that it was pointed out in the text in a devil's advocate sort of move, with an awareness of the nonuniform lines being toed.
The mystery was intriguing with its foray into mind control, psychics, oh my! While it occasionally felt like Diem had to take a step down from what he could bring to the table for Tallus to take charge, I wouldn’t be surprised if his brain might've been a little too rattled by all the emotional confrontations and breakthroughs. Regardless, I absolutely adored how the case brought them together and let them grow from their very, uh, optimistic starting point of non-friends, non-boyfriends, non-lovers, and non-partners 😂
Last but not least, NJR hit the narration out of the park again - I’m so glad he was chosen for this series and I can’t wait for all his future performances!

(Millie voice) AMAZING START
Revisado: 06-23-24
Mysteries have always sat on a special throne in my bibliophile heart: the thrill of the chase and exacting justice; of pitting myself against an author’s writerly machinations of red herrings and misdirections - all from the distanced safety of fictional pages and my bed. Cozy mysteries, what I consider a (mostly) no-frills whodunit, is a subgenre thankfully resurging in an age when we need it most, and for GA to take up the cozy gauntlet himself, I couldn’t be happier.
A departure from the author’s usual fare, no cursing, violence, or sex on-page lends itself to a markedly lighter and fresh undertone in his writing that, while possibly taking a few chapters to get into the rhythm of, never fails to capture the quintessentially cheeky ethos we see in varying capacities across all his characters and dialogue. It has its own added charm-filled luster when cushioned by the whimsical offerings of small-town settings and amateur sleuthing. Case in point: I hope GA is still intact after all the creatively intense curse word dodging (think Neo in The Matrix) and fourth wall breakages (Hulk smashing through brick walls) - those had me chuckling.
Andrew Gibson is a fantastically talented addition to the Hazardverse. He interprets our pov character Dash’s voice with perfection. I’m already dancing in anticipation for the others!

The best thing since sliced bread
Revisado: 06-21-24
This book marks the beginning of a groundbreaking crossover rivaling that of the Avengers; a writer’s ambitious project to execute mammoth logistics and interpersonal explorations under the looming, sinister underbelly of an operation too close to home; and a piece of art I will inevitably fall short of describing because words are not enough.
Almost three years mark Tean and Jem’s last on-page appearance in the Hazardverse timeline, and yet right off the bat, it’s like we never left. GA expertly paints the perfect set of circumstances to ease us back into their tender dynamic, near and dear to our hearts, while also leaving room for old, lingering insecurities to take hold. This resurgence threatens their stability, but the course back to harmony is Goldilocks's "just right," neither too glib nor too angsty. The authentic bridging of that gap sans feelings of disconnect, of being recklessly dumped into the fray, is a testament to the attentive care taken to stay true to these characters.
With thrumming pulses along its elaborate circuitry and the wherewithal to intuitively know the perfect amount of acceleration and deceleration for pivotal character moments, the plot is electrifying kinetic. The authentic display of men supporting men - emotionally, physically, brotastically - and offering each other a safe space to sit and discuss their own brutal yet beautiful treks in life will always make me misty-eyed. They’re oftentimes abrasive, other times playful, and now and again, vulnerable.
They’re spectacularly human.
As each couple has its own assigned narrator, I was most excited for / wary of their takes on the other main characters. J.F. Harding didn’t disappoint! He gave the assignment his own creative spin in a way that, while not always aligned with what I had in my mind, had no problems bringing each and every character to life in all their raw energy via their voices. I can’t wait to listen to the next one!

Next book when??
Revisado: 06-04-24
OKAY, I YIELD. I’m in. I want the next book. I need more of Tallus chipping away at Diem’s thick and sturdy shell.
While in the same universe as the Valor and Doyle series, Nicky James did a great job giving us a completely fresh dynamic and feel with these two. During my first readthrough, I found the first few chapters ran on the slower side, but NJR’s narration was so spectacular (his voice for Diem!), I didn’t feel the same hang up the second time. And again, once the plot picked up speed, and the mystery began to unfold, and more backstories were revealed, I struggled to put the book down.
I’m also an absolute sucker for tender moments that have me making aww faces at the screen. Gruff Fort Knox characters just hit different in these scenes 😌
So if you have any trouble at the start, please try to stick it out - I guarantee the ride has many more exhilarating turns waiting for you to take. And if you can have NJR be your narrative guide for this ride, all the better!
