Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Thoughtful and Thought Provoking
Revisado: 03-12-24
Full of careful and boundless creativity, passionate yet scientific discussion of virtues like responsibility, duty, knowledge, and priority. At times dense scientific jargon I couldn’t understand, at times eerily logical sociological treatise, and at times lengthy and loving crafted character piece. This series defied expectation and taught me a lot.

For SF fans
Revisado: 01-26-24
Brilliant and technical; half thriller and half textbook.
For a sci-fi fan, the frustratingly long and evenly-distributed scientific expositions seem to be popular. For a casual sci-fi reader, and via audio especially, I find myself getting less and less interested as the paragraphs of technical jargon flow through one ear and out the other.
But I stuck it out because, despite this, the setting, story, and gravity of this book are simply too good to abandon. The heady thought experiments, dual story telling methods, blend of historical, realistic, and futuristic settings, all wrapped up in down to earth yet unique and interesting characters. The story takes some set up, but whether you enjoy that or not, it pays off. Shoutout to Ken Liu ☯️

Narrator is good, story is confusing until reread
Revisado: 01-13-24
This narrator is great although some accents seemed misplaced like scottish on one eye was odd. also some stilted sentences that disrupted or changed the meaning and interpretation of what was said. his sad monotonous almost narrator voice was great for murgan and i felt fit perfectly
the story took me 2 reads to understand fully i love this book now but it can stop a series read through with its odd pacing and it starts plot wise along the last book
definitely my 3rd favorite of the black company now though after 1 and 2 and highly recommend

Introducing a new translation of Laozi’s classic work that makes the intimidating approachable and the complex comprehensible. Translated by best-selling author Ken Liu and read by acclaimed actor B.D. Wong, this new take on the Dao De Jing speaks directly to the sensibilities of a modern audience. Liu dispenses with footnotes and the granular details of academic debate in favor of presenting Laozi’s invaluable writing as clearly and colorfully as possible.

Does honor to a timeless masterpiece
Revisado: 05-23-23
Adds back value to a masterpiece of spiritual and literary writing which I will never get a chance to read without translation. A line in to the world of translating and writing. Well researched and deeply felt crafting both as a book and as an audiobook experience. Ken Liu has not hoarded the treasure of his journey, but given it to us.

Great acting, weak story
Revisado: 05-19-23
Tonally confused between PG family romp and witty adult adventure. Drama had potential but was so lost in chapters of constant and meaningless Happy Hour peril sequences. Over the top characters in an over the top world. Lots of potential, great audio, but very boring and underwhelming story.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

It was nice
Revisado: 05-13-23
Slow, cool, and short. Cool images and a good performance backed up with a simple story and somewhat forgettable characters. Some of the deeper threads don’t lead anywhere, but the scenery and imagery itself is good enough. Spoilers: also why would Welsh be cool with this elaborate scheme to kill what’s his name? Why not just go get him? Isn’t this plan much more conspicuous?
