Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Narrator Ruins It
Revisado: 05-09-23
This would have been an exciting account of harrowing maritime disaster. Instead, the narrator's hammy overacting gets in the way of the text. Why didn't someone give him better direction? If he had read the narration straight and only acted the dialogue, the audiobook would have worked better. But he acts out the entire book, overenunciating words in a goofy imitation of Barack Obama doing a goofy imitation of William Shatner turned up to one thousand. I recommend reading a print copy of this book.

Historia
Alexandra Robbins goes behind the scenes to tell the true, sometimes shocking, always inspirational stories of three teachers as they navigate a year in the classroom. She follows Penny, a southern middle school math teacher who grappled with a toxic staff clique at the big school in a small town; Miguel, a special ed teacher in the western United States who fought for his students both as an educator and as an activist; and Rebecca, an East Coast elementary school teacher who struggled to schedule and define a life outside of school.

Strong Narrative, but Her Accents . . . ????
Revisado: 05-03-23
There are ntriguing, enlightening, and infuriating narratives in this important book about the lives of teachers in the post-lockdown world. But the author's choice to employ accents for each of the teachers she spotlights trashes the entire audiobook. To say that Alexandra Robbins is no Meryl Streep is a huge understatement. Either she got horrific advice or someone involved in the making of this audiobook needs to be fired. As powerful as these stories are, I'm afraid the author's decision to use those clownish, almost offensive accents will be the worst professional decision she's ever made. This audiobook is a cautionary tale for any author choosing to narrate their own book.

Historia
Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles Davis was one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. Here, Miles speaks out about his extraordinary life. Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life.

Historia
A one-in-ten-billion natural disaster devastates Chicago. A Jewish comedian, his most devoted fan, and the city’s mayor must struggle to move forward while the world—quite literally—caves beneath their feet. With this polyphonic tale of Chicago-style politics and political correctness, stand-up comedy and Jewish identity, celebrity, drugs, and animal psychology, Levin has constructed a monument to laughter, love, art, and resilience in an age of spectacular loss.

Absurd Metafiction for Those with Patience
Revisado: 09-09-22
Whoa boy. I get that Levin is writing out of a tradition of absurdist literature, but this novel was a trial to get through. Somewhere through all the extended ramblings and shaggy dog stories, the depreciating Jewish humor, and the obnoxious main characters lies a worthy story, but you really have to dig for it. If all you care about is bloviating monologs, and characters who take way too many drugs and focus intensely on minutiae, and stories within stories within stories that add up to nothing, have at it.

Historia
In this grand and astonishing account, Alec Wilkinson brings us the story of S. A. Andrée, the visionary Swedish aeronaut who, in 1897, during the great age of Arctic endeavor, left to discover the North Pole by flying to it in a hydrogen balloon. Called by a British military officer “the most original and remarkable attempt ever made in Arctic exploration,” Andrée’s expedition was followed by nearly the entire world, and it made him an international legend.

A Zigzagging Tale
Revisado: 08-25-22
This book goes all over the place and the author can't seem to make up his mind whose story he wants to tell. Lots of digressions and people who just don't factor into the main narrative. This is unfortunate because Andre and his crew deserve better. My advice: skip this audiobook and listen to Madhouse at the End of the Earth instead. Different pole but a far superior book.

Excellent book but the narrator mangles so many names it's clear he knows absolutely nothing about Hollywood or films. Listen anyway.
