The never-ending, totally unnecessary "quote unquotes" after every comment from every character in the book nearly sent me over the edge. It was bizarre!

Besides the narrator reading in a very awkward cadence, there were numerous mispronounciations of the names of notable figures (Knollys and Bigge, to name a couple). A different narrator who spoke in a more natural manner would've made all the difference in the enjoyabilty of this book.

Part of the enjoyment of this book was lessened for me due to the strange cadence of the narration. In addition to the "speed" of the reading sounding unnaturally slow, I found myself struggling to determine if one sentence had ended and a nother had begun. Was punctuation just thrown to the wind?

I have no doubt this book would have been much more enjoyable if a more natural sounding narration had been employed.

Let me tell you how much I love this book....I've listened to it 3 time in the last 2 years. It is one of the most acerbically witty, thoughtful, and entertaining books I have ever read. Much like the subject herself. The narrator's voice, intonation, and pattern of speech was tailor made for this gem.

Don't waste your precious Audible credit on this one. It's mostly rehashed bits and pieces of quotes lifted from the books and articles of others.

While she did a fairly good job, names were mispronounced quite often. Just one of my pet peeves 😉

Chips was, of course, born and raised in Chicago so I highly doubt he spoke with a "full blown" British accent. However, a great deal of the charm this audio book emotes comes from the narrator's snippy, pompous, and thoroughly acerbic British accent and intonations. I found myself giggling and chuckling quite often - even relistening to certainpassages because they were so brilliantly and hilariously written and performed. If Chips didn't speak exactly as the narrator does , he should have. I loved, loved, loved it!

Of all of the many, many Audible books I've "read" this narrator was the most outstanding. Her accents, her tone, her inflections made me believe a different person was reading the lines of each character. I even believed she was male when she read the text spoken by men, such as Rhett, Dr Mead, and even the hardened ex-con, Archie. I don't know where you guys found her but you unearthed a gem!

The narrator of this book had a bizarre speaking voice and reading style. She reminded me of the horrendous Shakespearean actor on an old episode of Frasier. If you don't know what I'm talking about, YouTube it. I couldn't get past the first chapter. It's probably a good book....if someone with a normal speaking voice were reading it.

Narration and Annoying Phrase

I really tried to like this book as Mark Shaw seems so passionate about his subject. However, the overuse of the phrase, "this author" was terribly annoying. The female narrator was OK until she began quoting a male....she would then slide into a Dragnet-ish Jack Webb lower octave voice reminiscent of, "The facts ma'am. Just the facts." It made me giggle. But I don't think that's the reaction she was going for, though. But hey, it was a free download so I'm not going to complain too much. 😉😊
