Ok, so this is a review for both books :)

I listened to both under the Plus catalog, and I love both narrators and the author.

The story is compelling. The first book is about the two main characters finding their way to each other, and overcoming their history - both personal and as a couple.

The second story has them overcoming a cliffhanger from the end of the first book.

So…. What’s in this book for you? It’s well written. It deals with pregnancy difficulties with heart and insight. Very moving!!!!

TRIGGER WARNING - (spoiler free) pregnancy issues.
The female works in an ivf clinic, and her mother had issues. So these issues are woven through the story pretty deeply.

Ok, so the angst….. I wanted to slap both characters silly.
I wanted to lock them in a room and make them talk, rather than make assumptions on what the other thinks, feels, wants, fears etc….
There’s a whole lot of assumptions going on in this book and it drove me nuts!

In short, the story was beautiful, heart breaking and heart warming.

It felt a little repetitive with all the misunderstandings that went on. I’m glad I read it. But I feel like it could have been 1 book, not 2.

Would o suggest you read it? Only if you have patience for stubborn characters, and a box of tissues handy. Because seriously… The Angst!!!!!

How can it be murder if no one dies of murder?

So the beginning of this book was jarring for me. Mainly because I started listening purely based on the title :)

The concept that 99.9% of murder victims magically survive completely unharmed is an odd enough concept. This story ads the hero’s profession in as another new concept. Dispatcher. But in this odd new world, his profession makes sense.

Just think. Someone has had a terrible accident, they Will die of their injuries. Their only chance is if someone kills them. Then they have a 99.9% chance of waking up whole and healthy.

Once I got my head around this, I was enthralled by this story. The hero is someone who obviously tries to be moral. But he’s no Boy Scout. And despite the fact that murder is nearly impossible, he seems to be a prime suspect in several illegal activities- including murder.

He has a tenuous friendship with a female police officer, but be prepared that there is no love interest side story :)

I felt for the hero. He was swimming in deeper and deeper waters with more things happening around him, casting more suspicion on him as the book went on. And he seems alone. He seems fine with that, which honestly made me feel a little sorry for him.

By the end of the book, I felt glad I’d read it. There were a couple plot twists I wasn’t expecting, and a few that were obvious, but still fun to see play out.

This won’t be on my reread list. The world (while well created) is a little too dark and depressing for my tastes. Everyone seems broke and struggling. A bit too close to reality for me.

However I am glad I listened to the audiobook. It was well voiced, and captivating. I’d definitely recommend, but not to someone struggling with depression. Many suicide mentions.

My heart broke in this story for Griffin. Stuck in his human form and shunned by most of his community. Not to mention his devastating health issues.

But Hayley and her son Danny? Talk about melting a heart. That kid is just adorable! And Hayley loves him with everything she has, even if he has just revealed the shifter world to her by turning into a lion cub and getting stuck in a tree!

This has the usual angst plot. But it didn’t overwhelm the whole story. There were definitely plenty of funny and lighthearted moments :) And seeing the fire crew rally around them was good, but they didn’t play a huge part in the story.

Overall. I loved it. And am definitely reading again!

Found myself laughing so many times. The hero here is a bit of a bumbling idiot, but the sweetest one you’ll ever meet.
This a simple fun read. Unknowing human finds herself mated to a Pegasus shifter. Yep, there are mythical creatures as shifter breeds :) The usual disbelief, with the hero having to convince his girl that she is the one for him.

The drama through the book was interesting, but... I have to admit very few of the twists were unexpected. This read isn’t going to have you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s going on and who the bad guy is. It might have you falling out of your seat laughing at the hero though!
But I will say this for the drama. The end game wasn’t so obvious that I wanted to slap the characters for their blind naivety.

So. A book I will enjoy reading again, and has definitely got me hooked to go through the rest of the series, as the small glimpses I had of the other characters have me intrigued!

The 1 missing star was only for the predictability. But overall, I really did love this book!

Honey-Bun bunches of Oates, you are going to love this.

Quick warning. There is mention of sexual assault. I do say mention because it is not detailed. There is a time skip and we find the main characters dealing with the after effects. The attack itself is Never looked at in any kind of detail. And the post attack is mainly on the hero's focus on doing what he can to support his woman.

With that said:

Can you read this as a standalone?
Yes! As it's a prequel it is set before the women of the rock chick posse claim their men, so you don't need any back story to understand who's, what's and where's.

Are there fun snippets for Rock Chick fans to be excited over?
You mean apart from this being Daisy's story? Lol. There are. People that Daisy observes and mildly crosses paths with. Little cameos that are a fun nod to the fans, and what we know her life will become.
Oh, and of course you get to know Smithy a bit better too, but don't expect a huge role for him. This is Daisy and Marcus' story!

If I haven't read any Rock Chicks - but mean to - should I wait to read this???
Hmm. That's entirely up to you, however I will say that the end of the book mentions which rock chick couples have kids, who they are and how many. So, if you are definitely going to read the series, maybe you'd enjoy it better if you hold off. If you don't mind mild spoilers, then read away!!!

Now to the story itself.
Kristen Ashley mentioned that Daisy's story was dark. And yet she has managed to write this in such a way that Daisy's effervescent love of life shines right off the page.
We start the journey when Daisy is young, but really only have 2 scenes with her before we time skip to her working at Smithies. Those 2 scenes however, highlight the 2 people that gave her unconditional love as a child, and helped form Daisy into the amazing woman she became.

Daisy has an incredible sense of self, and confidence in herself that is only shaken briefly. She is an amazing and inspirational character to read. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil it, so I'll just say stripper, or maid, she learnt how to be a fine southern lady, and she never forgot her lessons!

Thank you Ashley for bringing Daisy's story into the light and sharing her HEA with us!

Cookie is wonderful as a Vintage Clothing dealer who accidentally sidelines as a psychic murder mystery investigator.

I love the ghost. Charlotte, the dearly departed. A fine Southern woman who would never give a list of enemies, how very unladylike lol.

This is full of quirky moments of Southern Charm! There are a few twists. Who is the good guy, and who is the bad guy?
