Slow, poor character development, not very interesting
Revisado: 08-16-24
Based off other reviews I kept thinking it would get better. It did not. About 10 hours in, interest started to pick up the way a good book would've done in the first chapter, only to slow back to a tedious crawl again

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Pretty okay
Revisado: 05-22-23
For me, the mark of a truly excellent story is one I know I will revisit many times. I can’t see myself reading this again, but it was good once. I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters, sometimes they blended together or got confusing. I can appreciate what the author tried to do with the variety of characters and power structures but the whole thing could’ve been woven together more smoothly.

Historia
Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

Historia
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

Well written, loved the narration
Revisado: 05-13-23
I really enjoyed the story. The need for neural network security is coming sooner than we think. I didn’t need a novella or the history of Hayden’s and I skipped the last 2 hours, which was a bit of a bummer since I thought the listening time was all for the main story and was surprised when it ended. I still recommend it, but be aware that the story is 2 hours shorter than listed.

Historia
A breakneck race against time…and an implacable enemy. An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian biotech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junkyard. Smoldering human remains on a remote mountainside in Afghanistan. A flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity. One path links them all, and only one man can make the journey. Pilgrim.

Good enough to read. Not good enough to read twice.
Revisado: 01-07-23
Pros: It kept me interested throughout and was easy to follow along.
Cons/problematic bits:
Infections take 1-3 days to set in, not an hour.
If you’re planning to kill the world, why do you care that someone threatens to hurt your loved one?
The narrator repeatedly says “wonder” instead of “wander” and it’s extremely annoying.

Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Good not great
Revisado: 03-21-19
I spent the entire book trying to figure out whether or not I liked it. Somewhere during the middle I decided there was not enough conflict. Somewhere near the end I realized it had been there, but hidden. Occasionally I intensely disliked the protagonist. Most of the time I empathized with him. Overall I enjoyed the use of language and writing style. It is not my favorite book and I don’t anticipate this becoming one of those that I read multiple times, but it was worthy of reading, provoked thought and self reflection, and was entertaining.

If you’re looking for well-edited text, character development, rational thought processes/understandable motivation, consistent themes, or masterfully woven plot lines, this is probably not the right book. I returned it.
