Okay... I had read Julie Garwood’s historical books when I was in high school and but I hadn’t finished them all. Now I see that Audible has the ones I missed, including this one. I'll have to say that this one isn't a keeper for me. I'm two hours away from completion and the story could have wrapped up long before then. Just drawn out for stupid reasons. Christina grates on me. I get why she is the way she is but there could have been a better way to present that and her fish out of water element. I won't even touch on the beginning of the book. It was a different time when this was written but cringeworthy. Also, SD’s narration doesn't help. Usually she's pretty good but her female characters or children sound nasally and unnatural. And JW has constant crutch words, particularly ”whisper”. A TON of whispering done. Between whisper and the H/H saying each other’s names, if this was a drinking game, the reader would be in a coma with a shot liver. If the story was a little tighter then this would be a better review. But this won't be my last JW book. Just won't return to this one.

The story was ok. Drawn out longer because the heroine was oblivious to a ton of signs. Even the hero mentions this. The title of the book itself is misleading. If this book was divided into three sections, it would be the title for the first book but not the last two. The middle is more of acceptance of their feelings and dealing with the unexpected. The last is the security of those feelings. Had erotic elements in it but not heavy. More just dealing with feelings and emotions. Hero was childish in the beginning. Still that way a bit toward the end but grows in ways. The same with the heroine who was afraid to ask anything it seemed. Narrator wasn’t my favorite but not the worst I’ve heard. I did love the songs Justin sings that.

The story isn’t too bad. Like the Rebel Bride, a good deal of this story is entwined with the previous ones. The narrator left a lot to be desired. I liked the second books narrator a little more because she gave a bit more color to the language she spoke. This one is the narrator from the first and no one told her to do anything different. And the first was hard to get through because of her style of reading. Seems like she’s just reading for the sake of it with some attempts of bringing characters to life. Her cadence and how she says words are off putting at times. For the sake of just wanting to finish the series I’m getting through it but just wish that maybe the second narrator finished the series if I had to choose the better of the two.

I was enraptured from start to finish. It's longer than my usual faire of books but well worth it. It's a slow burn, some sensuality woven throughout but the pay off is great. I love the story for just the difference you get from the usual historical romance novels. You have Christian, a genius of mathematical renown and of previous clandestine behavior now stricken with the aftermath of a stroke, and Maddy, the "thee, thou" Quaker who attends to him in an asylum. And the whirlwind of adventure goes from there. Two different stars in the universe that end up united for enduring love and a roller coaster of scenery and emotions. And to be frank, as many novels I have read, I believe this is the only one I've ever cried on. Nicholas Boulton is brilliant. He conveys especially Christian's passions, frustrations, and his stumbling of speech so well, which I know must have been a trial, but he seems to do it flawlessly. The ending 25 minute mark is about what got me. And I listened to it twice. So good and brava to a well done story.

Understandably, this story isn't for the reader who wishes to keep the romance between D & E pure. With that being said, it was an interesting take on Darcy's feelings and emotions for life in general. To see characters who don't generally see with a bit of fire to them (i.e. Anne). On that note, it was quite refreshing for me to hear David Rintoul revisit his turn as Mr. Darcy. Knowing that connection he has with the character makes it more enjoyable than most.

I'm over midway through the book and I'm struggling to finish it. It has good foundation and it's a different twist on the P&P story that we all love so much. There's a few things with plot and character development that could have been done better. As seemingly dark as a character like Darcy is, there should be more depth to him, his struggle to live the way he is and his overcomingly desire to love and protect his Elizabeth. And Elizabeth as well as shouldering a life of love with this man and their struggle together to overcome the evil. The characters since they've first met have evolved just an inch, to me, because it seemed like they were forced to due to circumstances. Hopefully by the time I claw my way through the book there will be enough to satisfy me. There was a few repetitions of actions or thoughts that could have been dotted out or elaborated on or wasn't necessary (details of showing the townhouse in London could have been done without the second time or Lizzy's Aunt Garderner telling her about the hickey's dear Uncle Gardener gives her. Could have done without that very forward visualization).

But also, I'm not really enjoying the narrator. She does a good job on throwing the varied voices throughout the book but I don't like how Elizabeth or even Jane or Georgiana sounds. Elizabeth in particular, with the slow and hesistant way the narrator pronounces the spoken words ("Oh.....Fitzwililam" makes me rolls my eyes everytime I hear that), makes the females sound so airheaded and unsure, when Elizabeth is the most headstrong and direct person in the book. It almost doesn't sound natural and it bogs down the story to make it seem even more lackluster and tedious, even through the action parts. Just no passion or excitement there and it makes me feel like I've been reading this book for a decade when by now, it well could have been finished by the time I had gotten to my place now. But this is where I stand on this story. As I had said, it was a good twist on a story like this about charming Mr. Darcy but could have been better. Possibly a little better on the narrator may have made this story a bit more enjoyable.
