Historia
The Duke of Severn is one of the greatest men in Britain. He's also short, quiet, and unimpressive. And now he's been robbed, after indulging in one rash night with a strange man who stole the heirloom Severn ring from his finger. The Duke has to get it back, and he can't let anyone know how he lost it. So when his cousin bets that he couldn't survive without his privilege and title, the Duke grasps the opportunity to hunt down his ring-incognito.

Two little plot, too much tedious relationship angst
Revisado: 10-31-24
I have come to expect better action/plot/and even character development in KJ Charles books. The issue of the emotional isolation of the Duke became tedious. Charles is an accomplished author and half of the content dealing with the Duke’s identity issues would have dealt amply with his situation. Instead, his identity crisis seems to be the entire raison d’etre of the book. All in all, the poor, poor, pitiful me storyline was rather sophomoric. I kept hoping that the book would get interesting, but rather it just plodded along with minor variations on the same theme.
There were many interesting minor characters whose development could have made the storyline much more interesting. At the same time, the whole subplot of the double elopement was a bit ridiculous. A woman with that much money and her supposed intrepidness seemed woefully incapable of managing her situation. And the final resolution was just unbelievable. Charles could have just written, and they all lived happily ever after. All in all, rather a disappointment.

Historia
Lady Evangeline Raine prefers animals to people and has no interest in marriage—much to the dismay of her flirty younger sister, Viola. Because their father has one rule: Viola may be courted, only if Effie has a suitor as well. Saddled with debt, Gage Croft, Duke of Vale, is determined to rebuild his estates. When the owner of his vowels offers him a fortune to charm the impervious Lady Evangeline for the season so Lady Viola can be courted, the game is on, even if it means pretending to seduce an unconventional wallflower.

Totally unbelievable
Revisado: 10-07-24
This author just takes too many liberties with reality in order to make it acceptable to modern readers. Why bother to write an historical romance that has nothing to do with history.

A fun idea made irritating by lack of effort
Revisado: 02-18-24
No Earl died unaccounted for in the Levantine or wherever he supposedly died. News of his death would have been sent immediately to the British Consulate. Also, there would have been provision in his will for her. It would not have taken much effort to make it realistic. Moreover, dying of yellow fever in this area would also have been unlikely. Typhus typhoid, or cholera would have had better verisimilitude. I won’t read another one of her books.

Miss Frances Cherrington has long been criticized as independent and prickly. And she's fine with it. Truth be told, she'd prefer to be a spinster—damn her family's desires. But it's a conversation with the devilishly handsome yet highly infuriating Earl of Winthrop that inspires the perfect escape from her nuptial troubles. Frances could ensure that no one will marry her—by happily ruining her own reputation.

Tedious
Revisado: 12-02-23
The original premise was rather fun but the heroine was needy and self indulgent. Moreover, regency romances have become not so subtle soap boxes for diatribes against the admittedly appalling 19th century position on women’s rights. But being hit over the head for three hundred or so pages by yet another young woman’s need for self expression by methods other than through embroidery or water colors and that same young woman’s insistence on not being a brood mare or being compelled to obey in all ways the decrees of a husband has become tedious in the extreme. This author as have others has forgotten the art of dialogue, cannot tell a story through action, and has resorted to yet another story which relies on saccharine emotions interspersed with graphic sex.

Viscount Penvale has been working for years to buy back his ancestral home, Trethwick Abbey, from his estranged uncle. And so he’s thrilled when his uncle announces that he is ready to sell but with one major caveat—Penvale must marry his uncle’s ward, Jane Spencer. When the two meet in London, neither is terribly impressed. Penvale finds Jane headstrong and sharp-tongued. Jane finds him cold and aloof. Nevertheless, they agree to a marriage in name only and return to the estate.

Everything about this novel was trite. I found myself longing for any sort of descriptive narrative rather than drone on about scowling faced insecurities.

Historia
As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenwood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at 22, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor. So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn't look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home.

Long and Tedious
Revisado: 07-14-22
This book was mired with over description,, a somewhat unbelievable plotline, too little dialogue, and an actual lack of character growth even though that seems to be the purported intent of the author.
Most of the book was devoted to relieving characters of blame and heaping blame upon the father which was already obvious. The rest of the book seemed devoted to sermonizing about the nature of love rather than developing any sort of real plot. Needless to say I was very disappointed. I looked forward with pleasant anticipation to this novel, but I doubt if I continue with the intended series.

Every cliche in the book
Revisado: 10-01-15
It's a shame that someone who strings words together as well as this author can not invent a storyline that is nothing but over the top sentimentalism, trite, unbelievable characters, and a stunning lack of moral values. The reformed rake is a tried, true, and appealing character in romance fiction, but we are offered instead a self proclaimed brutal killer full of self loathing for deeds done to and by him, but who simultaneously declares enjoying his acts of depravity. In this not very subtle homage to "beauty and the beast," we have a lack witted beauty and a beast without contrition. I wish that I had not wasted any of my time on this book and will not be tempted to read other books by this author.
