Historia
Academics, journalists, and popular historians agree: our greatest presidents are the ones who confronted a national crisis and mobilized the entire nation to face it. That’s the conventional wisdom. The chief executives who are celebrated in textbooks and placed in the top echelon of presidents in surveys of experts are the bold leaders - the Woodrow Wilsons and Franklin Roosevelts - who reshaped the United States in line with their grand “vision” for America. Unfortunately, along the way, these “great” presidents inevitably expanded government - and shrank our liberties.

A Blatant Cash Grab
Revisado: 09-03-20
The story is fairly generic short horror story collection with a loose interwoven narrative.
The book shows no real connection to lovecraft in either style or substance. I personally doubt the author has read more than a handful of lovecraft if even that.
Going into the book I assumed it’s main merit would be its “wokeness” since that was all any of the reviews I read of it seemed to care about. The reality I think is that the “woke” concept is all it has going for it. Outside of the concept (which it fails miserably to achieve) it’s simply a mediocre horror affair.
Personally I love the idea of a lovecraftian horror centered around marginalized people. His work focused so heavily on othering and unlocking the mysteries of ones past that it is ripe ground to explore those through the lense of historically disenfranchised people, especially considering Lovecrafts feelings of the time.
The book for whatever it’s goal seemed more interested in exercising the authors white guilt than being creative or paying homage. I reiterate the book is written by a white guy attempting to pile into a period piece his vision of black peoples feelings about racial prejudice which seems patronizing as hell to me. I’m not one to say you can’t write for people who are different than you but seriously you owe it to them to write good characters, not bland flat caricatures.
Mostly I think I just feel let down at how excited this title got me. It’s not bad per se. it just failed to deliver on all of the lofty promises it’s title and concept conjured up.

Valuable Information, Seemed Self-Contradictory At Times
Revisado: 07-25-20
I enjoyed the book and gleaned a lot of insight into what reality vs fiction are. The book should be a 5 for the data alone. Unfortunately Bjorn has the same problem Steve Pinker does. They both like to arbitrarily declare things problems right after they explain why it’s really not. Very frustrating

Historia
Imagine knowing what the brain craves from every tale it encounters, what fuels the success of any great story, and what keeps people transfixed. Wired for Story reveals these cognitive secrets - and it's a game-changer for anyone who has ever set pen to paper. The vast majority of writing advice focuses on "writing well" as if it were the same as telling a great story. This is exactly where many aspiring writers fail - they strive for beautiful metaphors, authentic dialogue, and interesting characters, losing sight of the one thing that every engaging story must do.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Historia
The Scarlet Gospels takes listeners back many years to the early days of two of Barker's most iconic characters in a battle of good and evil as old as time: The long-beleaguered detective Harry D'Amour, investigator of all supernatural, magical, and malevolent crimes, faces off against his formidable and intensely evil rival, Pinhead, the priest of hell. Barker devotees have been waiting for The Scarlet Gospels with baited breath for years, and it's everything they've begged for and more.

This book is a relentless assault on the ideas of Krugman and on the Keynesian economics that would have the government direct the economy in order to maximize prosperity and prevent recessions. Economist Robert Murphy has an uncanny ability to recall Krugman's columns and interviews and puts his command of this material to devastating use.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Like watching someone predict the world 70 years ahead of them or are these themes that evergreen? I know Rand gets a lot of hate (and I have my own issues as well) but there is something deeply uplifting in her works that I think gets ignored. This one is long...very long...but I think it’s required for the level of exploratory detail. Top Marks!

Historia
Homeschooling: A Hope for America is a collection of articles taken from The Voluntaryist, a newsletter with a libertarian outlook which has been published since 1982. The anthology has been assembled by Carl Watner (from many of his past articles, as well as those of others), and contains an original foreword by John Taylor Gatto. This anthology argues against government education in a unique way. One who advocates voluntaryism opposes government schools, not because he opposes schooling but, because he opposes coercion, which is to be found in government taxation, compulsory attendance laws, and in the monopolization of public services. Most of us would agree that there should not be any state religion; that religion should not be supported by taxation; and that people should not be compelled to attend religious services. Why shouldn’t the principles of voluntaryism in religion apply to education?

The Book That Made Me An Anarchist
Revisado: 09-06-18
A great primer for home educators, voluntaryists and american parents. It's hard to overstate the issues covered in this book. It's entertaining, challenging, encouraging and deeply moving. Through essays, articles, and letters we see the touchstones of education throughout our nation's history and discover how and why it has become the way it is. This book is an encouraging charge to parents --all parents-- to take their part in ther growth of freedom.
