Historia
In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

Unique story - unlike any book I've read in all my decades. I definitely need to listen again!
Revisado: 04-20-25
Quirky narrator, hilarious nicknames for everyone she encounters, surprise ending, and great quotes from William Blake's poetry. I might even have to learn more about astrology.

Many individual stories linked to a unique land and house in New England. Some stories are gripping, others not. The writing is beautiful and evocative, and the ghosts are a delight.

Breathtaking, heartbreaking, astounding
Revisado: 01-12-25
The story is compelling, as are the characters and the writing. James has the heft of an epic poem that gets stronger with every development. By the last chapters, I couldn't take a pause. I had to keep listening listening to the brilliant narration and thundering conclusion. Percival Everett's masterpiece places him right up there with Homer and Dante's.

Not the best in this series

The same intriguing cast of characters in the same regions of the country that we've come to know so well. But the pace and substance of the narration lack the punch of others in this series.

Historia
Raised in Marrakech by a French mother and English father, a 17-year-old girl has learned above all to avoid mauvais ton ("bad taste" loses something in the translation). One should not ask servants to wait on one during Ramadan: they must have paid leave while one spends the holy month abroad. One must play the piano; if staying at Claridge’s, one must regrettably install a Clavinova in the suite so that the necessary hours of practice will not be inflicted on fellow guests.
