Lost for words
Revisado: 12-22-22
It took a chapter or two before my ears adjusted to the accent but once I could understand the narrator, who was absolutely astounding, this book took me on a visual and emotional journey. This book is a winding road of pain, triumph, despair, disdain, and wanting. I couldn’t stop listening.
I’m becoming more and more a fan of historical fiction and this one did not disappoint. So happy that I made this selection.

Historia
It’s the summer of 2019, and Professor Pi Suleman is a Black man from Memphis with a lot to endure - not only as a Black man in Trump’s America but in his hard-earned career as an adjunct professor. Pi is constantly forced to bite his tongue in the face of one of his tenured colleague’s prejudices and microaggressions. At the same time, he’s being blackmailed by a powerful professor who threatens to claim he has assaulted her, when in fact the truth is just the opposite, trapping him in a he-said-she-said with a white woman that, in this society, Pi knows he will never win.

Loved every moment
Revisado: 12-22-21
Being a native Memphian myself, this book paid homage to the beautiful city that I know and love in a way that reminded me why I remained here instead of moving away after undergrad. Eric Jerome Dickey created a powerful and telling love story to blackness, brokenness, family, and the idea of knowing, loving and accepting one’s self.
Narration was on point and beautifully ebbed and flowed throughout the entire book. Loved, loved, loved this book!

It feels incomplete
Revisado: 12-15-21
The only gripe that I have is that the story came to such an abrupt end. I was left feeling incomplete. Great performances by the narrators and great storyline, but I needed more. I assume (hope) that there will be a sequel to this story.

Historia
Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick is an outstanding collection of stories about love and migration, gender and class, racism and sexism that proudly reflect African-American folk culture. Brought together for the first time in one volume, they include eight of Hurston’s "lost" Harlem stories, which were found in forgotten periodicals and archives. These stories challenge conceptions of Hurston as an author of rural fiction and include gems that flash with her biting, satiric humor, as well as more serious tales.

Aunjanue Ellis brought these words to life! Excellent performance of this collection of witty short stories. Kudos to Ms. Hurston. Each character and storyline were phenomenal! Great listen…

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

A necessary love letter
Revisado: 04-08-21
One of the most valuable things a man can do is impart wisdom into his son and Ta-Nehisi Coates does a spectacular job of showcasing this act of love and sharing it with the world!
