Intriguing story of intertwined lives
Revisado: 04-17-25
There were so many different characters with Italian, French, and Spanish names that it became confusing to me, and I had to skim through some of the narratives so as to not get bogged down. The narrator was fantastic, though, and his accents, character voices, and timing helped me understand more that I think I would have from reading the paper version.

Historia
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

It was very long and sometimes plodding or boring. But the story developed through the chapters and it became an enjoyable story

Historia
An early classic of American literature, The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of Henry Fleming, a young soldier in the Union Army, who flees the battlefield and later returns in shame, seeking to redeem himself by receiving a war wound - a “red badge of courage” - in the conflict. Hailed for over a century as one of the finest ever war novels, Crane’s tale is an early example of American realism and naturalism.

A different kind of story
Revisado: 02-28-24
When I got this book I didn’t know what to expect because I knew nothing about it. The author did an exceptional job of displaying how “the youth” came to a better understanding of himself during the course of just a few battles, even though the author had never personally experienced a battle himself.

Join David as he encounters his eccentric Aunt Betsey, faithful Peggotty and the villainous Uriah Heep, and as he falls in love with Little Em'ly, Dora and Agnes. And then there is old school friend James Steerforth: dashing, daring and seductive. This dramatisation explores the complexities and intimacies of that relationship beyond anything possible in Dickens' day, in an adaptation giving fresh life and vividness to this beloved tale.

An interesting but frustrating story
Revisado: 12-26-23
The book sounded more like a stage play that had no video. There were long pauses between speeches that sounded awkward without being able to see what was happening and not much explanation was given. Sometimes the background noises (barking dog, children playing) were so loud it covered what the actors were saying and was very distracting.

Riveting!
Revisado: 11-20-23
Some reviewers called the story “predictable”, which might be true in some parts. But the addition of an autistic brother and dysfunctional family members added some twists that kept it unpredictable for me.

Historia
Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Feels allegorical
Revisado: 10-09-23
I was grateful for the author’s opening chapter that explained his intent for the book to be a story about rabbits. He did not intend allegory. If he had not made those remarks I certainly would have been trying to explain an allergy of some kind. This was a very enjoyable, exciting, imaginative, and well-told story about rabbits. The reader was excellent.

Even though I knew this story from college days, listening to it read by a gifted narrator made it even better than I’d remembered. George Eliot had an observant eye and her descriptions of physical and emotional things really engage the reader/listener.

Historia
Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows. Genevieve rose from the ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her - until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school.

An enjoyable story
Revisado: 07-29-23
The story itself is compelling and realistic. I loved the perspectives of different generations and sexes, but for me the best part was the performance. The multiple talented readers brought the story to life. There was some language that made it not family-friendly, but infrequent enough to keep it inoffensive.

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Not an entertaining book
Revisado: 07-26-23
There was way too much detail about nothing in this book. Details should draw the reader into the story to understand the characters or scenes in a deeper way. The story also bordered on pedophilia, really, in that the “hero” appeared to be “grooming” the heroine for sexual encounters. I stopped reading at around chapter 30 after hoping for something more. It didn’t happen even that far into the book. Not recommended.

Historia
Determined to set the historical record straight, and clear her conscience, Temperance Flowerdew - the wife of Virginia’s first two governors - puts quill to paper, recounting the hardships that nearly brought the Jamestown colony to its knees, and the extraordinary sacrifice of her servant girl, Lily. A transporting and evocative story, The Brief and True Report of Temperance Flowerdew is a fiercely hopeful novel - a portrait of two intrepid women who choose to live out their dreams of a future more free than the past.

Good depiction of history

This is a well-written and well-narrated story that helped me get a better understanding of settlers’ lives in the early 1600s. Not sugarcoated but still sympathetic to who the people were.
