Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Terrible don't believe the hype
Revisado: 08-15-15
What disappointed you about Anathem?
Utterly boring. An hour in and nothing has happened except a discussion on the meaning of words and a painfully detailed account of someone fixing something. ugh.
What could Neal Stephenson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Have something actually happen.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Monotone.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Historia
The legendary Deep Thoughts and New Yorker humorist Jack Handey is back with his very first novel - a hilarious, absurd, far-flung adventure tale. "Are you a fan of books in which famous tourist destinations are re-purposed as unlivable hellholes for no particular reason? Jack Handey's exotic tale is full of laugh-out-loud twists. A reliably unreliable narrator and his friend, who is some other guy, need to get out of town. They have a taste for adventure, so they pay a visit to a relic of bygone days - a travel agent - and discover an old treasure map."

Awful. Don't listen to the hype
Revisado: 02-02-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better flow to the narrative. It's almost as if someone wrote an entire book on twitter using the most bland jokes possible.
What was most disappointing about Jack Handey’s story?
The story was simply awful. Full of unfunny jokes, unfunny setups, with no actual humor. It's not even a real story, just a sequence of unfunny one liners strung together.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I'm not sure if the book has no punctuation but it was certainly narrated that way.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Stench of Honolulu?
If I was an editor, I would have rejected this as a book.
Any additional comments?
I can only believe the rave reviews were plants. On the other hand, if you thought the "Ernest goes to,," series of movies was funny, this is probably the right book for you.

Historia
For the past five years, she has been grown slowly as part of a mixed organic/synthetic family. She knows very little about her android mother’s past, so when her grandmother arrives and attacks them, young Amy wastes no time: she eats her alive. Now she’s on the run, carrying her malfunctioning granny as a partition on her memory drive. She’s growing quickly, and learning too. Like the fact that in her, and her alone, the failsafe that stops all robots from harming humans has stopped working….

Not as good as I thought it could be
Revisado: 08-15-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really - it was frustrating experience.
Would you be willing to try another book from Madeline Ashby? Why or why not?
Probably not. There were compelling ethical questions but no answers or hints that the author even knew what questions the book raised.
How could the performance have been better?
For some reason, the speaker pronounced Javier with a 'D'. Very odd and took you out of the narrative spell repeatedly.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Sure - Hollywood would turn it into a sci-fi action flick much like 'I, Robot'. It would be a fun way to pass the time with some popcorn.
Any additional comments?
I really wanted to like it - the description sounded right up my alley.
