Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

Boring
Revisado: 09-21-09
I bought this book because I love historical fiction, particularly WWII era, and it had some good recommedations. I've tried really hard to get into this audiobook, but I just can't do it. I've started the thing over several times, but it's just not grabbing me and I find my mind wandering every time. I've only listened to about two hours, so maybe it's not fair to review it based on that, but I am quite sure that I will not be able to finish this book. I listen to audiobooks in the car and I'm afraid I will fall asleep at the wheel if I continue to listen to this. Buyers should knwo that this isn't a novel in the standard sense of the word, but a collection of letters. It's difficult to keep track of who is who and how everyone relates to each other. It's also just very, very dry.

Historia
Liz and Sarabeth were childhood neighbors, brought as close as sisters by the suicide of Sarabeth's mother when the girls were just 16. In the decades that followed - through Liz's marriage and Sarabeth's attempts to make a happy life for herself - their relationship remained a source of continuity and strength. But when Liz's adolescent daughter enters dangerous waters that threaten to engulf the family, the fault lines in the women's friendship are revealed.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-20-07
I've read Ann Packer's first book, The Dive From Clausen's Pier, twice and it is one of my all time favortie books. I had been eagerly awaiting the release of this book and downloaded it before a week where I was going to have to drive around 800 miles for my job. This book was really slow and depressing and I found it hard to listen while driving because it made me feel drowsy. I wanted a couple of the characters to just get over themselves. I agree with another reviewer that the lack of communication between many or the characters was frustrating. I thought the narration was okay. This isn't my favorite narrator, but I don't think she made a bad situation worse.

Historia
It's a Saturday morning in Brooklyn. Joel Miller, age 28, stands outside his locked bathroom door. Behind it are his girlfriend Lisa, a Dixie cup, and a pregnancy test. While she stalls for time, Miller is left in his hallway to wonder and wait: for the results of the test, for the pieces of his addled life to come together, for some kind of divine intervention to guide his actions when Lisa finally emerges.

Terrible Reader
Revisado: 11-02-06
This story isn't bad in and of itself, but the reading is awful. The narrator's voice is annoying and he mispronounces several simple everyday words. I had trouble making it through to the end of this one, but I wanted to find out what happened to the characters enough to muscle through.

Historia
Six years after her Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller, A Thousand Acres, and three years after her witty, acclaimed, and best-selling novel of academe, Moo, Jane Smiley once again demonstrates her extraordinary range and brilliance. Her new novel, set in the 1850s, speaks to us in a splendidly quirky voice—the strong, wry, no-nonsense voice of Lidie Harkness of Quincy, Illinois, a young woman of courage, good sense, and good heart. It carries us into an America so violently torn apart by the question of slavery that it makes our current political battlegrounds seem a peaceable kingdom.

I loved ths audio book. I listened to it while driving from Minneapolis to Los Angeles and it made the time fly by. A great epic story perfect for anyone who likes historical fiction or anyone who was a tomboy.
