Historia
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: Dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time.

I picked this book based on the description, and the cover with the Great Dane, assuming it was going to be primarily about the relationship developing with the dog despite/because of the narrator’s mourning. Instead, it seems to be an incessant, wandering monologue about the narcissism and self-importance of writers. The author name drops and quotes other authors ad nauseam as she drones on and on about the writing profession. It was exhausting. The scattered mentions of the dog were the only bright points. But they were brief and infrequent enough to not hold up the narrative. even more about the pain of mourning would have sustained my interest. But no, just a writer talking about writing and authors. I am surprised it was nominated for awards. Maybe it was by writers who connected with the true subject here? Or maybe I just missed something.

Historia
A powerful novel about friendship, basketball, and one teen's mission to create a better life for his family. Written in the tradition of Jason Reynolds, Matt de la Peña, and Walter Dean Myers, After the Shot Drops now has 3 starred reviews! Bunny and Nasir have been best friends forever, but when Bunny accepts an athletic scholarship across town, Nasir feels betrayed. While Bunny tries to fit in with his new, privileged peers, Nasir spends more time with his cousin, Wallace, who is being evicted.

Did not disappoint!
Revisado: 09-28-18
I learned of this book through a coworker and, when I saw it compared to “The Hate You Give,” I had to give it a go. It did not disappoint! It’s easy to connect with the characters, each with their own human flaws, and the story is engaging throughout. What’s more, the book is peppered with insightful, poetic passages that provide a beautiful thread to the narrative. These emerge as simple observations and thoughts from the characters, giving them a gravitas they might not otherwise be leant as teenagers. My only complaint is the way Wallace was portrayed by the narrator. The way he was voiced seemed to flatten—even stereotype—a character that was clearly written to be complicated and frustrating. But other than that, the narration was stellar, as was the story. A great listen for sure!
