Jason must contend with alliances he doesn’t want, friends he cannot find, and enemies ranging from angelic despots to the power of an undead god. He must face a realm that has been warped by his own mind and find a way to save a friend whose sacrifice got them this far.

Slow story, lackluster performance
Revisado: 08-08-23
First: this is NOT a bad book. It wasn't really my cup of tea though.
Very slow story that felt like it didn't have much driving it. I understand it's an intro for the series, but it still felt like it just happened to be following some random characters. Also, while I enjoy the author's other series and writing style, the narrators in this book had me really struggling to continue listening. Not sure if I'll listen to any follow on books in this series, but I don't feel like I wasted my time listening to this one.

Better than book 1!
Revisado: 09-15-22
Nick once again gives an incredible performance that could make any book enjoyable.
Melissa did a good job with Book 1, but I think with the ground work laid out already, she was able to build out the various character arcs nicely here. Each arc is well thought out and followed its own path, but it's never a stretch when they cross each other or have parallel action. I'm very happy with the development and am excited to see where the next book takes us!

Decent story, great performance
Revisado: 08-29-22
I always love Nick Podehl, and this was no exception. His performance brings a great life to each character. The writing was good and the story engaging. There were a few times where a specific phrase or action was repeated enough that it was a bit jarring, but nothing enough to stop me from immediately starting book 2.

Revisado: 07-30-22
Beautiful discussion of so many situations we run into as parents. Written in an easy to understand flow, with guilt-inducing accuracy. The feelings Bridgett Miller touches on were all familiar, and it felt like she was speaking directly to me. I will absolutely be listening again...and probably again after that.

He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

Repetitive, but important
Revisado: 02-10-22
Quite a few passages felt like they were repeated, almost verbatim, from previous sections of the book. The message is important though, and the logic was sound throughout. Marohn's credentials lend further weight to his observations.
I didn't agree with the decision not to have a description of the tables and charts from the physical/e-reader copy, but felt the performance was otherwise fairly easy to listen to.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Not a light listen, but worth it.
Revisado: 01-14-22
Frankl grips you with his stories, then gives a sweeping education in his philosophy, to the proof of which you can retroactively see on his anecdotes from the consecration camps. Vance is easy to hear, and eases what could have felt like a very dry and uninteresting lesson on Logotherapy. I'll be listening to at least the second part again because it was very dense and I'm sure I can glean more from repeated listens.
Definitely recommend.

A setup for the future, but enjoyable as always
Revisado: 06-06-20
As much as I would have loved another 40+ hour installment like Book 7, this was a great setup for the next book. I found myself a bit upset at not getting further along in the story, but I realize that would have required either not fleshing out Richter's journey as much as it deserved or another massive book (I'll never say no to that though!) I'm excited for the next chapter especially since this one set such a clear roadmap for what's to come.
Aleron's writing style is as good as it has been for the rest of the series, and Nick absolutely knocks the performance out of the park once again.
I just hope I don't have to wait another 2 years!
