Historia
John Gotti was without a doubt the flashiest and most feared Mafioso in American history. He became the boss of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion—with the brazen and very public murder of Paul Castellano in front of Sparks Steakhouse in midtown Manhattan in 1985. Not one to stay below law enforcement’s radar, Gotti instead became the first celebrity crime boss. His penchant for eye-catching apparel earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don;” his ability to beat criminal charges led to another: “The Teflon Don.”

I can’t say how happy I am that I actually bought and read this book. I wanted to talk about it to everyone in my life. It’s a fabulous look at the psychology of mortality. The characters feel real. Truly a rewarding read, and the narrator did a fabulous job, too.

Historia
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Sisters of Treason by Elizabeth Fremantle. Lady Jane Grey has just been executed by her cousin Mary Tudor and her two younger sisters, Mary and Catherine, live in the shadow of their sister's tragic demise. Lady Catherine's fatal flaw is her compulsive desire for love, while clever Lady Mary is burdened with a crooked spine and tiny stature - and both have inherited the curse of royal blood.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The story, the flow, and the performance were all exceptional. I prefer straight up history but I am such a fan of this genre that I often read historical fiction, and this book was better than many I’ve read by better-known authors. I especially enjoyed hearing about Mary Grey, though much of it is speculation. Some of the lines about life were so well put and philosophical that I actually jotted them down to think about later. Give it a read, Tudor fans, you’ll be glad you did!

Historia
On the evening of March 9, 1566, David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, was brutally murdered. Dragged from the chamber of the heavily pregnant Mary, Rizzio was stabbed 56 times by a party of assassins. This breathtakingly tense novella dramatizes the events that led up to that night, telling the infamous story as it has never been told before.

From the very beginning of this short book I was sucked in, entranced by her descriptions of the character’s appearances and actions. The author has an amazing talent for creating atmosphere. I have read many books about this event but this is the best by far. Very much looking forward to her future work in this genre!

This book, besides the never-stopping unfolding of events, takes you right into Manhattan in 1965. In so many subtle ways it really captured the style and thought of the era. I knew some about HGB, but enjoyed hearing about her struggle to make Cosmopolitan the success it became. The protagonists own story kept me sucked in until the very end . Excellent performance, too. Really glad I bought this one!

For a long time, Carmelo Anthony’s world wasn’t any larger than the view of the hoopers and hustlers he watched from the side window of his family’s first-floor project apartment in Red Hook, Brooklyn. He couldn’t dream any bigger than emulating his older brothers and cousin, much less going on to become a basketball champion on the world stage.

Historia
The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

It was good until…Ireland
Revisado: 05-12-22
I was very excited to read this book. I actually enjoyed the first third of it and had no issue with the maturity of the narrator’s voice. I was glad that Scarlet met her father’s family as well, but when she decided to up and sail to Ireland, it was too much for me. By that time there was so much empty dialogue and filler I had no interest to continue. Alas, I will never know what happens with Rhett and Scarlett, but I can’t give it another 20 hours to find out.

Historia
If I Had Your Face is a riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, South Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossible standards of beauty, after-hours room salons catering to wealthy men, ruthless social hierarchies, and K-pop mania. Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.

So much more than just information about nutrition. This book really dives deep into the tactics and scheming that the food industry does to manipulate people both physically and emotionally, to be addicted to their unhealthy food. A real wake up call.
