Historia
As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were soon caught, including the notorious SS leader Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among them were Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler’s brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann.

Good book after Patton
Revisado: 11-24-20
Excellent book. Recommend reading Killing Patton, then this book. With respect to complaints about narration, sounds like he had a cold in the beginning, but I didn't notice it later in in the book. With respect to complaints about going back and forth in time, they decided to go over each SS war criminal individually, and some of them lived for a long time in hiding, so their stories span over many years.

It’s 1811, and President James Madison has ordered the destruction of Shawnee warrior Chief Tecumseh’s alliance of tribes in the Great Lakes region. But while General William Henry Harrison would win this fight, the armed conflict between Native Americans and the newly formed United States would rage on for decades.

One of the best books I've read. If there were any photos or maps in the paper book, it would be nice to have access to them if one purchases the audio book.

Fantastic book
Revisado: 02-22-19
I am a big fan of John Bogle's books. He has made investing simple and more effective for me. I liked this Bogleheads book as it is line with John Bogle's teaching, and helped answer some questions I have, particularly regarding investing in international stock funds. The dictation of web addresses and tables could potentially have been put into "exhibits" like Bogle's new edition of little guide to investing. Overall highly recommended!

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Great book
Revisado: 08-02-15
As a physician, I thought this book was fantastic. First, do no harm, then do good. Empathy and compassion. We learn these principles in medical school, but do not always follow them, as we are always trying to see what we can "do". I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Dr. Mackowiak, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, offers a gripping and authoritative account of 13 patients who took center stage in world history. The result is a new understanding of how the past unfolded, as well as a sweeping survey of the history of medicine. What was the ailment that drove Caligula mad? Why did Stonewall Jackson die after having an arm amputated, when so many other Civil War soldiers survived such operations?

Historia
In 1875, tuberculosis was the deadliest disease in the world, accountable for a third of all deaths. A diagnosis of TB - often called consumption - was a death sentence. Then, in a triumph of medical science, a German doctor named Robert Koch deployed an unprecedented scientific rigor to discover the bacteria that caused TB. Koch soon embarked on a remedy - a remedy that would be his undoing. When Koch announced his cure for consumption, Arthur Conan Doyle, then a small-town doctor in England and sometime writer, went to Berlin to cover the event.

Incredible book
Revisado: 07-20-15
What an incredible book. I was captivated by it. As a physician, I was particularly interested in one part of the book. Koch said in Chapter 12 that that were 2 different bacteria that cause disease in humans and cows. While he was essentially wrong, he was actually partially right, as there are 2 species, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (in humans) and Mycobacterium bovis (in cows). However, they are very hard to distinguish even with modern techniques, and we usually just identify Tb at the level of "Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex", and usually do not identify it at the species level. However, Mycobacterium bovis is known to cause tuberculosis in humans, so this is what makes Koch wrong. Regardless, his initial contributions on the germ theory were revolutionary. I highly recommend this book.

Incredible review of medical history
Revisado: 07-20-15
As a physician, I thought this was an amazing review of medical history. The initial lectures were especially superb. Perhaps in a subsequent edition, we can hear about other greats (e.g. William Osler, Robert Koch, etc.). I highly recommend this audio book.

Throughout his legendary career, John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group and creator of the first index mutual fund, has helped investors build wealth the right way and led a tireless campaign to restore common sense to the investment world. Along the way, he's seen how destructive an obsession with financial success can be. Now, with Enough, he puts this dilemma in perspective.
