Historia
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

Would be better as a full-length novel
Revisado: 08-13-20
Also...it is a fictionalized account of a true story. This should have been stated in advance, it would have been more entertaining if known to be biographical.

Deservedly a classic
Revisado: 08-03-20
It’s all it’s hyped to be. It doesn’t follow 21st-Century “rules” for a novel so it may seem a bit slow in places, but be patient and it’s worth the read (or listen).

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

A great novel and an important book
Revisado: 05-29-20
The characterization was strong and the reader cares about the characters. The plot holds the reader’s attention and includes the right number of twists. And it is as important a story as fiction can be.

Maybe the best post-apocalypse book
Revisado: 09-12-19
Required reading for the genre. Great characters, plot, and prose and don’t overlook solid pacing (including the 20 years that fly by in mere pages).
Performance is 4 stars instead of 5 because there are too many times when the narrator mispronounces the punctuation—including periods, which I didn’t think was possible but there you go.

Historia
Australia is one of the last places where life still exists after nuclear war starts in the Northern Hemisphere. A year on, an invisible cloak of radiation has spread almost completely around the world. Darwin is a ghost town, and radiation levels at Ayres Rock are increasing. An American nuclear-powered submarine has found its way to Australia where its captain has placed the boat under the command of the Australian Navy.

If you’re into this genre, this is one of the must-reads. Not as classic as Earth Abides, but worth your time.
Performance: Narrator was too slow. I set for 1.25 speed, which helped. It’s Australian accent and language, so I couldn’t go 1.5x.

Best opening yet, powerful ending
Revisado: 08-07-19
The plot is yet again intricate, unpredictable, and fascinating. There may have been one missing chapter—in this year when the main characters are all 16 and involved in various relationships, we bled right through Valentines Day without a mention—not to gain a “G” rating, because there was significant VD description in Book 5. This did not detract from the plot, but was moderately distracting. It still warrants five stars—at least.

The best HP yet
Revisado: 07-27-19
All of the HP books are great, but this is the best of the first five. This is the book that made me realize that not only is the HP series some of the best modern fiction, but that it ranks among the greatest literature of all time. Few authors in history have been masters of both character development and plot.

Historia
Golan Trevize, former councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all - and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible. But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Horribly disappointing—plotless, even
Revisado: 07-10-19
I love the trilogy, like the prequels, and enjoyed Foundation’s Edge. But a Foundation fan can safely ignore this book, and probably should.
There’s not much of a plot—Asimov focuses on speculation and philosophy. There is a problem set out at the beginning of the story, but the ending never gets back to that problem. Worst of all: The ending, to the extent that there is one, essentially nullifies the entire trilogy and even book 4. I won’t elaborate for the sake of those who choose to read (or listen to) it anyway...but don’t spend your 18 hours on it and then say I didn’t warn you.

Worth reading and yet...
Revisado: 05-30-19
This book pushes the Foundation another 120 years toward realization of The Seldon Plan. As always, the characters are well-crafted and fun, and the plot is complex enough. BUT:
It’s too touchy-feely ‘80ish, even to the extent of presenting as scientific “fact” the Gaia theory that an entire planet is one being, so that every pebble shares YOUR consciousness.
That’s a bit much.

As well done as Dostoyevsky did it (but then I prefer Tolstoy). Good enough that I will read or listen to another by the same author.
