Historia
Palia’s emotions are in turmoil. After watching her son succumb to Empyrean fire, she barely escapes the same fate. Guilt-ridden and alone, she will not stop until his killer is brought to justice. The Protectorate forbids Ferrash to have emotions. That suits him, since he cannot avoid the people who control the Empyrean. Making this sacrifice prevents them from hijacking his feelings and using them as a weapon against him. When Ferrash spots Palia’s ship venting atmosphere, he is forced to save her.

Space Opera Hidden Gem
Revisado: 07-17-22
This was such a fun sci fi story that blends together so many of my favourite space opera tropes while still managing to feel fresh. I have seen most of these elements before, yet I found myself glued to this story.
This book hit so many of the beats I look for in my science fiction. The characters were likeable. The plot was intriguing with enough suspense. The worldbuilding was a touch hard to follow in places, but that could have been a factor of listening rather than physically reading it.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for an entertaining underhyped space opera.
Disclaimer I received a copy of this audiobook from the author for review. I thought the audiobook version was very well done, other than strangely long pauses between chapters. The narrator's voice reminded me of Jefferson Mays, who does the Expanse, with a touch of Simon Vance in places.

Fascinating Medical Thriller!
Revisado: 10-19-21
3.5 Stars
This was an entertaining medical thriller. Written by a doctor, I appreciated the insights and accuracy of the medical information explored in this novel. The author was very clear that this is NOT autobiographical, but he was still able to provide an informative narrative using his background
As far as thrillers go, this was more interesting than suspenseful. There were not many twists and turns until the end. Instead was more of a character focused story centering around the downward spiral of the protagonist. The main character is (purposely) not a likeable man. Instead he is flawed, dealing with addiction and claims of malpractice
My favourite aspects were definitely learning more about the doctor profession and inner workings of the American medical system. I personally would not recommend reading this book right before undergoing a medical procedure if you have any medical anxiety. It might freak you out a bit!
Overall, I enjoyed this one and would recommend this to fans of thrillers looking for insight into the underbelly of the American medical system.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the audiobook from the author. I highly recommend the audio version because the first person narration fit the format well. The narrator did an excellent job, matching the tone of the story, with a strong, even performance.

Historia
When the first astronauts of the Mars Colony returned to Earth, they brought a mysterious, metal box they had found half-buried in the red dirt, called the Mars Cube. The scientists assigned to uncover its secrets tested it, scanned it, tried to blow it up, and everything in between. Then they accidentally opened it. Biosafety level-4 laboratories, BSL4, hold the most deadly viruses on the Earth, and Juliet handled them daily. Her research at the CDC landed her a position on the Mars Cube Investigative Team in the world’s only BSL-5 lab.

Compelling Scifi Thriller
Revisado: 06-03-21
This was an interesting near future scifi novel that blended together hard science into a page turning thriller. Published in 2021, this book will appeal to the post pandemic crowd who are fascinated by the deadly power of viruses. Yet, I don't think this book was particularly triggering since the setup was different enough from the real life pandemic we have all lived through.
Written by a "lab girl", this novel offered a near to life idea of what could happen if an alien virus were to be discovered on Mars. As a piece of fiction, the book still required some suspension of disbelief regarding alien life, yet remained generally grounded in scientific principles.
There was a romantic relationship that played a central role to the storyline. Personally, I tend to dislike these subplots, but I found this one was handled taking away focus from the main crisis.
Overall I enjoyed this novel. I got the opportunity to listen to audiobook version, which had excellent narration. I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a new scifi thriller with a compelling narrative.
