My Favorite Audio Book EVER!
Revisado: 07-10-20
This is my favorite audio book. EVER! I have listened to this wonderful new audio book from doctors Bob Blackwood and John Flynn three times since I purchased this book. I laugh every time I listen to it because of the tongue-in-cheek humor so appropriate for a Bond book, and I learn so many things from the incredibly well-researched writing. These guys should do stand-up comedy in between their teaching jobs at the university. What makes this book so totally unique of other books about James Bond is the clever way their have organized their information! I have collected over the years a couple of dozen books about 007, and they are all just about identical. The other books list the films in chronological order, then comment on the plot, cast, gadgets, etc. What I like best here is the information is arranged by subject matter. So there's a chapter on James Bond girls, and the authors go into depth about the various women, discussing their favorites and why they have chosen the girl as a favorite. They also add unique Ian Fleming spin to things, by telling us what Fleming thought of each of the girls and why one was good or bad. For example, did you know Fleming thought women with cold lips were enemy agents? I would have never guessed that in a million years! Then there are chapters on cars and gadgets, food and clothing, on all those details that make James Bond Bond. You never get that kind of insightful information from those authors who list everything by the films in chronological order. Subsequent chapters look at the world order as it appears in the Bond movies, life lessons that would only appear in a Bond movie, lots of fun and witty aphorisms that most of us probably ignore when we're watching the movies. I learned more from this one book about James Bond than I ever learned from the other couple of dozen books in my collection. And I think what made this book so much fun for me is these two authors are roughly the same age as me. So when they talk about putting on the 007 music while pretending to drive their car like an Aston Martin with enemies all around, I get it! I really do. I have done the same thing. Just like John and Bob, whenever I get dressed up in a tuxedo, I always have to say Bond, James Bond to the mirror. I did read the only other review posted for this audio book, and it is obvious to me that he is a sourpuss who just doesn't get the kind of fun that the authors were trying to share with the rest of us. I also like Jeanie's review of the book. She keeps her copy of the book handy while watching her favorite Bond movies. She gets it, too. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! I can think of no better way to have fun, except perhaps putting on 007 while I'm driving and pretending to be a spy. Bob and John will have you smiling, while also learning so much more about the Bond films. Great book!

Historia
When Inspector Kate Dawson, a homicide detective from the San Francisco Police Department, is called in the wee hours of the morning, little did she know what would be waiting for her on the tarmac of San Francisco International Airport. Air Force One has landed with a corpse in the lavatory; the victim is a beautiful Fox News reporter, known as the "fair and balanced" girl. Apparently, she enjoyed kinky foreplay, like having her oxygen supply limited, a gasper, but it just went too far...or did someone else take advantage and finish her off?

One of the Great Mystery Novels of Our Day!
Revisado: 12-17-19
The body of a very sexy, blonde, Fox news reporter has been found dead in the lavatory of Air Force One moments before touchdown at San Francisco International Airport by one of the Secret Service agents sworn to protect the President. The suspects on board this very special aircraft include the new female President, the First Man, the longest-serving member of the United States Air Force, a couple of Hollywood celebrities, several congressman, members of the President's staff, Secret Service agents, and a handful of reporters from the Press. Whodunit? And why was Megan Kendrick, the fair and balanced girl of Fox news, murdered? Not since Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express has such a collection of strangers become suspects together in a single murder. Kate Dawson, the intrepid homicide inspector from Author Flynn's Kate Dawson mysteries, plays the modern Hercule Poirot in this murder mystery. The backdrop: San Francisco, the dedication of a new VA Hospital (at the Presidio). The United States, on the edge of war with Iran. Other complications: A KGB assassin who was recruited by Putin during the Cold War, and has only one target, Kate Dawson. The Chief of the Secret Service who has lied about covering up Kendrick's murder. Written by a real master of suspense, Flynn's narrative is crisp, with plenty of twists and turns, and suspense that reaches its crescendo as the VA Hospital is set ablaze by terrorists and Dawson must risk penetrating the burning building in order to catch her number one suspect, Discovering who killed Megan Kendrick is only one part of the solution. The reason why will astound you, and keep you up nights, after the book is long since finished. One of the great mystery novels of our day! Not since Murder on Orient Express has there been such a murder.

A Great Read! Showing Flynn's Wide Narrative Reach
Revisado: 12-16-19
I've read several of John Flynn’s Kate Dawson thrillers and at least one science fiction novel over the years, but the chance to read a selected handful of Flynn’s stories in a single collection, like Visions in Light and Shadow, seemed too good to pass up as an audio book. As you might expect, the collection of stories – as chosen by the author himself – is a wonderful read, showcasing his wide narrative reach, which includes fantasy and science fiction, horror, and mysteries, and his incredible use of words and phrases that are lyrical and prosaic. Few writers today have as much fun describing settings or building characters as Flynn who confesses his writing was influenced by the great F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ray Bradbury. Each story in the collection is framed by a short introduction written by the author, explaining his inspiration or motivation to write that particular story. For example, Flynn’s Hugo-nominated short story, “A Gift of Verse,” was inspired by Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Bradbury’s “The Smile,” and takes place in that mythical community just adjacent to Jackson’s and Bradbury’s small town America. Seven-year-old Martha Goodman and her family travel to Collinsville, Illinois, over a crater-pitted road in their horse-and-buggy to witness a hanging; the setting appears to be pre-Civil War America, but is in fact years after a nuclear holocaust has destroyed most of the world, and left the handful of survivors barely clinging to life. Goodman’s family and the other townsfolk have agreed to put everyone they deem guilty of destroying their world to death; on that particular day, they are hanging a real enemy of the people, a poet. The seven-year-old sees nothing wrong with the poet’s last words, as he recites a poem liberally from The Psalms, and puts his final words to memory as she returns home with her family. The story is both chilling and horrifying, but is of course a metaphor for all those groups who seek to silence others with their self-proclaimed censorship. Other stories in the collection are much more optimistic, particularly the novella that inspired Flynn’s science fiction novel, The Jovian Dilemma. All the rest of the stories are inspired by the author’s vast imagination, including a short-short story about a time traveler who insists on returning a tool he bought seconds before at the Sears & Roebuck in another continuum. “Satisfaction Guaranteed” is both funny and satirical. I’m giving the collection 5 stars for Flynn’s outstanding writing and imagination and Geoffrey Boyes excellent narration. Listen to the dialect Boyes assumes for “A Gift of Verse” and you’ll experience yet another master at work with this performance.

Great Writing! Edge of the Seat Suspense!
Revisado: 11-21-19
Mystery novels come in many shapes and sizes. Agatha Christie once said, “I specialize in murders of quiet, domestic interest...” what we consider today to be the "cozy" mystery in which a local sleuth undertakes a murder investigation in the local neighborhood, like so many Ms. Marple mysteries. Sherlock Holmes mysteries, thanks to Arthur Conan Doyle, usually feature a main character (like Holmes) who is occupied in tracking down the truth about an event, usually a murder. If the protagonist is in any danger, it is usually moderate, and becomes a problem only as the detective approaches the truth. A thriller, like most James Bond novels from Ian Fleming, finds the protagonist in danger from the very beginning, and he or she only gradually becomes aware of that danger as the story unfolds. This third book in John Flynn's Kate Dawson thrillers is very clearly a thriller in the traditional sense of the term. Homicide Inspector Dawson awakens from a nightmare, left over from her previous case, and discovers from the opening murder-suicide that she has stepped right into another kind of nightmare. With deft precision, Author Flynn builds a level of suspense as his main character gradually becomes aware of real danger that she faces; the clues seem to suggest something more is going on, but Kate does not immediately discover (nor do we as readers) the much larger plan. This is no simple crime, but the blueprints as designed by the "architects" of the title to bring about the end-of-the-world. When she finally goes undercover as "Miss Lonelihearts," an aging dowager, she puts together the final puzzle piece, and realizes how truly deep she is in. I liked this latest Kate Dawson thriller, probably more so than the other books, because it is so well-written and plotted. (Note: the other books are also well-written and plotted, but now I know just how clever and effective the author is with telling such a complex tale!) In great suspense thrillers, like this one, the reader is aware of things unknown to the protagonist. For instance, the reader sees the bad guy plant the bomb, and then suffers the suspense of wondering when or if it will explode. Similarly, we know they intend to destroy San Francisco and most of the West Coast, but we suffer wondering when the atomic bomb will be detonated and if Kate Dawson has figured out enough of the mystery to stop it. I was very literally on the edge of my seat in suspense as the material in the final chapter unfolded. Suspense thrillers are ideally suited to audio books. I'll be looking for more Kate Dawson thrillers to keep me entertained.

Historia
Life on the planet Jupiter? Former Senator Mitchell Ryan had always been told the violent, storm-tossed world was devoid of life. He had dismissed rumors of a strange life form living in the energy rich atmosphere as mere fantasy. Confronted with several mysterious deaths, sabotage, and similar acts of terrorism - possibly perpetrated by wealthy politicians who profit from the current crisis of fear - Ryan faces a dilemma that will change his life and determine the fate of the solar system forever.

Hooked from Beginning! A Throwback to Great SF!
Revisado: 10-07-19
First, let me say that I don't like most contemporary science fiction. The Golden Age of Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, and Ray Bradbury has given way to uninspired, cliché-ridden stories about the military fighting aliens on cardboard worlds or alternate histories that are not all that alternate. Science fiction used to be the literature of ideas and ideals. Most modern sf is pretty lame, with the occasional work of brilliant genius. Robert Sawyer's Calculating God was a truly welcome surprise, for example. I am also pleased to say The Jovian Dilemma by Hugo-nominee John Flynn is equally brilliant and full of real genius. In the next century, part of the solar system is colonized and at war because of limited, natural resources. A rare form of energy is discovered in the atmosphere of Jupiter, and the race is on by competing powers to control that new resource. The earth has sent a Republican senator to oversee the project, and in a page stolen from today's political climate, he may be tainted by his association with previous, nefarious powers that seek to profit from the discovery on Jupiter. The real discovery, however, is that there is a very unusual lifeform, living in the Jovian atmosphere, which may or may not be sentient. Do we give into the politics of the power and greed, or protect the Jovian's natural environment? That is the dilemma. This very rare work of science fiction stands head-and-shoulders above most of the dreck that is produced today, and is a welcome throwback to Clarke and Asimov, asking very real questions about man's place in the cosmos, what determines sentience, and where did we all come from. I was hooked right from the beginning, and loved this book! It deserves a Hugo. If you want your mind enhanced (like a blast from the Krell educator) and want to think about the big questions science fiction used to ask, then you'll want to read this book. A welcome relief from all the crap that is out there.

Masterful! Reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock!
Revisado: 09-02-19
Alfred Hitchcock's greatest films - Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest, Psycho - were psychological thrillers, in which the hero (or heroine) was always in too deep, way over their heads, and just barely managed to get out alive but with grave, often psychological, damage. If Hitchcock were alive today, Intimate Bondage would have been made into his next great thriller. The audio book is simply masterful, with many of the Master's great touches. Kate Dawson is a newly-minted homicide detective; she has survived a number of scrapes, not the least of which is having her daughter killed in a senseless shooting with Kate's own handgun. She knows that one more mistake will end her career, so she's determined to catch the "Angel of Death" serial killer and restore the department's faith in her ability as a detective. She's like the Jimmy Stewart character in Vertigo. A serial killer has murdered several people in San Francisco's BDSM underworld, and in order to catch him/her, Dawson must go undercover with the help of a twisted, game-playing psychologist who has written a book about BDSM. The tension mounts with every scene as Kate pursues her killer, under the watchful eye of Frank Miller, her mentor, an African-American detective who is a few months shy of his retirement, and the help of a nerdy scientist who has been stalking her with a FEMA satellite system he built. As allegiances change throughout the story, you never know who is really on Kate's side and who is purposely working against her. Throw in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man and Rope, and you've got a real mystery-thriller that will have you listening until the final page for the answer. Chaz Allen does an exceptional job with the twists and turns of John Flynn's narrative, making this audio book one of the best on the market today. This book launched the Kate Dawson thriller series, so once you survive this one, you've got four more books in the series. Great job!

A Really Exciting Plot! Amazing Characters!
Revisado: 08-09-19
Most thrillers these days, especially those proliferating as audio books, feature a cookie-cutter plot recycled from Ian Fleming or Earl Stanley Gardener, your typical stalwart hero, his plucky girlfriend, a dastardly villain, and a handful of bland, secondary characters who appear to have stepped out of central casting. So, therefore, you can imagine my pleasant surprise when I started listening to Merchants of Death by John L. Flynn to discover the hero was a woman. But not just any woman. One who is flawed, vain, label-obsessed, and a bit ruthless; she actually turns an unwarranted sexual advance from her superior into real opportunity for advancement, rather than become yet another statistic for the “Me-too” movement. Kate Dawson is clearly no wall-flower. She is a tough-as-nails homicide detective who gives as good as she gets. When threatened by a younger rival, she puts her in her place, and proves she is more than ready to take over the “boys-only” homicide bureau. When paired with her army-intelligence boyfriend, she’s not about to be left behind of a dangerous mission; she’s on his team! The villains in the story are a brother-sister duo who views incest as a virtue and a group of Army deserters who have forsaken their allegiance to God and County to turn a profit. Kate’s fellow detectives and friends are a quirky bunch of misfits and miscreants, the saddest of all being a nerdy scientist who falls for a femme fatales. Narrator Boyes does an excellent job of bringing this totally original story to life. A really exciting plot, populated by amazing characters. I highly recommend this book!
