Poor riiting, poor narration
Revisado: 07-11-24
Basically no story, no mystery at all, just talk about nothing. The narrators attempts at various characters were awful, but she was able to roll her "r's" anyway

Complex, but easy to follow.
Revisado: 09-18-21
I usually have trouble following complex plots but Box managed to keep this book complex, exciting and easy to follow. Besides, he can describe beauty like a poet. And don't even get me going on how perfectly Chandler can "channel" Box's brain in his interpretation.

Huge!
Revisado: 09-01-18
We listen to books every weekend as we drive for three hours and back three hours. We were able to follow this book easily and it made the miles whizz by because it's captivating. We used to live in Kenya and I have visited Ghana and kept thinking of the Rwandan massacre while we lived there. This should be made into a movie by the director of Black Panther!

My wife had no trouble following the plot, but I kept getting getting utterly lost in all the characters and misc details that seemed to have little to do with the plot. The narrator seems to have not enough different voices to identify each character distinctly.

Historia
From one of Iran’s most acclaimed and controversial contemporary writers, his first novel to appear in English - a dazzlingly inventive work of fiction that opens a revelatory window onto what it’s like to live, to love, and to be an artist in today’s Iran. The novel entwines two equally powerful narratives. A writer named Shahriar - the author’s fictional alter ego - has struggled for years against the all-powerful censor at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

long and boring
Revisado: 03-18-17
At first it seemed like we would gain interesting insights, and that was true, but then they were just repeated over and over. The story never seemed to go anywhere and in the end just seemed to stop. I figured out early on that we were supposed be looking for symbolic underlying meanings and perhaps they were flying over my head. It seemed to be one of those books for a lit class to analyze or for a jaded reviewer to enjoy because it was very creative in its approach. But for casual listening as we ride in our car not so much.

But among those who have come to Robert Oppenheimer’s "enchanted campus" of foreign-born scientists, baffled guards, and restless wives is a simple man in search of a killer. Alexander McCall Smith’s internationally best-selling and award-winning series starring Botswana’s leading lady detective continues with this 11th charming tale. Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi travel to the Okavango Delta to visit a safari lodge beset by unexplained events. There they are awestruck by the breathtaking scenery, but also troubled by the region’s many difficulties—not the least of which is the occasional grumpy hippopotamus.

Very Internal Thoughtful
Revisado: 06-10-10
I noticed that some reviewers thought this book was much slower than the others. It is more about what is going on in the minds of the characters and not so much about the mysteries she solves. I enjoyed the thoughts because we lived in Kenya for five years and the thought processes and cadence of speech reminded me of my friends there. Perhaps people who are most interested in the mysteries should stick with other detective series. This one is mostly about the people who live in Africa.
