An interesting story that has fallen flat
Revisado: 05-09-24
I really enjoyed the first two books of this story. The world, the characters were very interesting especially the sipres. It seemed like it was taking a bit of time to get to them actually solving their problems but in the second book there was a lot of really dangerous people popping up and preventing that.
Unfortunately this book focused entirely on that "getting nothing done"
Almost no progress is made towards any of their goals and in fact the majority of what they do in the book ends up being meaningless. they go to Kaleford to get stronger, get info from pharren labs, find the other arbiter and get the sister healed. They spend almost the entire book at the lab. They don't trust Pharren so they gain no information, they do not get any info on the arbiter, they do not heal the sister, they do not get stronger.
Then by random chance they suddenly find the arbiter and get a little info. making all the time they spent at the lab basically meaningless. WHICH IS ALMOST THE WHOLE BOOK!
The only time they do anything particularly interesting or meaningful is them going into the spire. which was cool but still didn't really push the story forward at all.
It's so frustrating because I wanted the story to be cool but I can't trust that the next book isn't going to be chapters and chapters of them taking about random stuff that is unrelated to their problems and then having their problems randomly solved without their intervention by another character who was barely in the book. (cough cough.. epilogue flower cough)
And why the hell is he so hell bent on going back to school??? his whole reason for going to school was so that he could find brother. HE ALREADY DID THAT!
This man is dealing with Gods and beings of immense power, he is offered personalized training in exactly what his powers do and he's like "oh, I actually have to go back to school" bull. School is meaningless now and someone in his situation wouldn't be going back.

A rough start with a much better middle
Revisado: 10-10-22
The intro to the story, Hollican, has such huge plot holes that I almost stopped reading immediately. (I'll go into more detail*) but after that and the introduction of the other characters it gets a lot more interesting. Though I feel like it ends somewhat suddenly without fully wrapping up most of the main points.
The reader can also be a bit lackluster at times. especially when someone is "yelling"or "putting a lot of emotions into what they are saying" he often reads those parts a bit flatly or like he's whispering to make sure he doesn't wake someone up.
(more detail* *some spoilers for the first chapter*)
Most of what happens in the intro is fine but the reasons Demir seemingly "can't" stop his army from sacking the city make no sense. So he's not fast enough to get to the front, fine. he doesn't want to kill them, fine. why can't he pull up a wall of glass in front of them to stop them? Smash the glass around in a huge could above them to make a ton of noise and scare them? maybe cut then in the feet and legs even, not lethal but it'll stop them.
even if that doesn't work there is no reason the soldiers wouldn't recognize their Commanding officer. not only will he be wearing a special uniform but they also said in the same chapter that THE SOLDIERS gave him the nickname Lightning Prince. Are they really not gonna know him? Thirdly he was wearing a ceremonial cloak. one that is "Traditional" meaning after a major campaign victory, the COMMANDING OFFICER is given this special cloak to celebrate EVERY TIME. sure normal people might not know what it's about but most people will hear about it.
yet somehow the soldiers just can't seem to recognize him.
if anything Demir should have not known what was going on until they were already sacking the city. once 10,000 soldiers are spreading through a city is not really easy to stop and we could have avoided all the garbage reasons he somehow couldn't stop it.

If you liked the first one, you'll like this more
Revisado: 02-01-22
The main enjoyment for me in this series has always been the the bonds and the way they grew throughout. This continuation not only expanded on all of the interesting leads that were introduced in the first book but also grew the pairs in such a real and interesting way. All the while adding new and new parings with interesting connotations to explore. I eagerly await the next book to see how all this new information resolves!

A fantastic world with fun whitty characters
Revisado: 11-27-20
A truly fantastic and well built world paired with a cast of characters that makes you want to keep reading just to get more of them.
While a had a few qualms with the first book this second volume gives me everything I wanted to keep reading for and does an even better job of doing it!
And though a few things felt a bit too coincidental or convenient, especially near the end, the story still knocks you off your feet!

Not what I expected but an interesting twist
Revisado: 05-08-20
The world created here continues to fascinate and grow. Though based on the title I expected the book to be about a slightly different topic I still greatly enjoyed watching the characters grow throughout and when it finally did come to the topic I expected I was quite surprised in a good way.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Revisado: 04-28-20
A fantastic story of character growth, convoluted plots, and magical tyrannical governance that comes together to create an enthralling world. The fascinating unique magics, steadily growing characters and twisting story make it hard to put down. Only heightened by the acting of Michael Kramer.
As Kelsier says, there's always another secret.

Fastastic Story with a Unique Perspective
Revisado: 04-08-20
A fascinating story that offers a really interesting take on heroes and villains. I'm usually not the biggest super hero/villain fan but this felt so much more like a real situation with organizations. As opposed to there's a million heroes but we're ignoring all but one or a few.
The mostly villan perspective also did such a great job of making them feel human, as opposed to just I'm a villan because evil.
Overall fantastic, I wish I could listen to the next one right now.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

An quite interesting concept the falls a bit flat
Revisado: 09-10-19
I thought the concept of it all, the lengthy aside descriptions, and the intrigue of it in the beginning was quite good. Unfortunately the story as a whole becomes more and more underwhelming the further in the book you go. Multiple characters set aside as being more important that do almost nothing throughout the book. Little to no reason for certain negative events to happen. The incredibly lackluster reason the bad was being bad at all.
Read this for the interesting reason it started and the interesting deep asides into other characters. But if you're a story lover like me, you'll probably be a bit dissatisfied with the ending.
The narrator as well, while I liked his voice, does not do much to make characters distinct and there are multiple places where that can make you lose track of who is speaking.
