Excellent book, jarring reader

Thomas Madden has produced vintage scholarship for the masses here. For a concise history, the book is thorough, detailed, learned, but supremely accessible to general audiences. It is also honest, balanced, and devoid of the usual vitriol and cheap superficial clichés traditional western historians of the crusades rain on those mediaeval campaigns of “piety and charity,” judging them by today’s standards, likening them to some putative early forms of rapacious Western colonialism. And so, although this is a book I would read again and again, I found the Audible reader insufferable; his attempts at pronouncing French, German, and Spanish names (although perhaps well-meaning) were unsuccessful, confusing, and ended up being jarring and an distraction, interrupting the momentum of an otherwise excellent text. My advice is if you’re unable to produce foreign names natively, please stick to the English equivalent; English is perfectly fine, in a book written in English, and intended for anglophone audiences.

Awful audio of an otherwise decent work.

I am a fan of Irwin’s work, an orientalist of remarkable erudition, and I was truly looking forward to this new work. Two hours into the audio, and I’m sad to say it is way below sub-par and I must let it go. The narrator mangles simple common Arabic words beyond recognition; his pronunciation of commonplace Arabic surnames as if they were French (specifically using the French “r” for what reason I have no idea) is inexplicable and frankly jarring; sometimes his reading of foreign/Arabic or Persian terms is so annoyingly halting it sounds as if entire phrases and passages have been recorded over. I will try to give the print book a shot, but this audio is definitely not a good sign. Irwin is a thoughtful meticulous scholar; his writing is illuminating, compelling, witty; this audio is godawful and renders Ibn Khaldun unapproachable. I can’t believe Princeton would approve the production of such a shoddy rendition of an eminent scholar’s work. DO NOT BUY!

Monumental, erudite, illuminating.

A work of remarkable erudition and breadth and depth; a historian’s philological Odyssey that weds the storyteller’s gift to the wordsmith’s magic, and not without the wit of a Bernard Lewis or the lyrical charm of an Elie Kedourie. 3000 years of history is intimidating. This book makes it approachable, memorable, and fun. A veritable philological and historical feat otherwise, the author’s superficial (and borderline jaundiced) treatment of Israel weakens the narrative. But I suppose he had to somehow palliate the Arabists in a history that remains otherwise sober, dispassionate, and unsentimental about “Arabs” (without the definite article.) I just bought the hard copy because this one is a keeper and a much needed to histories of “Arabs” that largely remain in the realmS of apologia and fairytales.
