He truly was a Scary Bastard
Revisado: 11-15-23
This book. Just wow. Referencing several of his previous works, this novel exists both as a love letter to Aron’s constant readers and as a stand alone slasher the likes of which has never been seen. The violence in this story can not be understated and no one is safe from it. From all the great horror references to the genuinely well observed characters, it’s clear Aron put a lot of soul into this work. I can’t wait for Scary Bastard 2 and 3. I do have an issue with the voice work. He certainly says all the words, but there is no force or emotion behind it. It’s like a student being forced to read in class.

Historia
Oliver Fitch has a troubling issue: He lives in a state of constant terror. After purchasing a convenience store in a once civil society, the streets around him have rapidly devolved into utter lawlessness. They're now festering with sinister gutter scum that live only to harass and intimidate him. His pathetic profits are gouged under the threat of violence, and there isn't a damn thing he can do about it. Because in a city with no rules, where the sun never shines, the authorities are no help. In fact, they're an equal part of the problem.

A sad and violent saga of revenge
Revisado: 11-14-23
This book surprised me. By the description I was expecting just a gory revenge story and it definitely delivered, but there was a heart at the core of this novel that I wasn’t prepared for. It’s a story of evil people getting what they deserve in the most graphic way, but I think there’s a little bit of Oliver in each of us, wishing we could be more for the people we love but not having the courage to make it a reality. I loved this book and recommend it for anyone who can stomach extreme horror.

Historia
A mysterious internet figure, known only as Mr. Boy, is preying on depressed teenagers and brainwashing them into horrific acts of self-harm and suicide. The macabre message behind "The Dropout Challenge" is simple: Drop out of sight. Drop out of school. Drop out of society. Drop out of life altogether.

Great story
Revisado: 11-13-23
This story is extra scary knowing that things like the events within happen. With our obsession as a society with being in the know about trends and challenges, there are no doubts that some of the more underground challenges are dangerous and even deadly. There is an odd optimism to this tale as well, giving the story that much more of a hook. I loved this book, and if you are a fan of extreme horror I think you will too.

What a story
Revisado: 11-09-23
This is such a great read. It had my attention throughout and even the most disgusting moments were emotionally impactful. The whole concept of this story is fascinating. I mean who among us hasn’t wished we could just leave this reality to try something new? I’d give ten stars if I could.

Historia
Plagued by nightmares of torture and intense violence, a writer suffering from trauma-induced memory loss seeks to solve the mystery of his missing past. The only clue is a single page of an unfinished manuscript found in an old manual typewriter, in a fleabag motel, in a small West Virginian town called Luntville. It is here that the writer will seek answers, believing that if he finishes the book he was writing, his memories will return.

Fantastic exploration into depravity
Revisado: 10-17-23
Edward Lee’s fiction is hit or miss for me, so I went in to this with no expectations. I’m so impressed with this book. The world building is excellent, tying local fables in to his specific brand of extreme horror, making the town seem very real and very gross. Everyone in this book is wonderfully disgusting, and the POV character is relatable and grounded enough to really make you feel his revulsion. I won’t go into the plot because you’ve got to go into this blind, but let’s just say it reveals itself slowly and at a fantastic pace, making you want to keep reading. I’ll be going into the sequel with high expectations and I recommend this book to anyone with a strong stomach and a love for the extreme.

Fantastic adventure novel
Revisado: 10-10-23
Knowing Edward Lee’s work, I was expecting to have to wade though a lot of deviant extremity to get to the core story, but not the case here. Absolutely blown away by the world he creates in this novel. The characters are interesting, the city of the mephistopolis is well realized and described, and it culminates in a finale that makes me want to immediately start reading the next in the series. If you’re looking for extreme horror with a good narrative, this is definitely for you. I would also recommend this to anyone new to extreme horror, as it didn’t turn my stomach the way that some of Lee’s other work has. Fantastic book. Period.

Fascinating mystery buried under gratuitous perversion
Revisado: 10-10-23
I’m no stranger to extreme horror, and I found the core mystery in this novel to be really creative, but the author seems distracted by his own female characters, never hesitating to waste hundreds of words describing the shape of their breasts at every opportunity. I understand that the main character of this story is supposed to be an unlikable deviant, but it doesn’t sound like the character’s voice getting bogged down in the descriptions. If there is a sequel, more television and less wifu creation would really improve the pacing. Overall a great and interesting concept, just in execution it falls short due to excessive asides about the shapes and sizes of the women written in. The reader is fantastic, however, never flinching through the gore and violence and giving convincing voices to the characters.
