When Sylvester, the Duke of Salford, first meets Phoebe Marlow, he finds her dull and insipid. She thinks he is insufferably arrogant. Excellent narrator, fabulous story
Revisado: 06-16-23
I love Georgette Heyer and have many favorites. I’ve decided that this is my new favorite because of the adventure with Edmund, the Duke’s ward. I laughed so much at the thought of this little tyrant turning everything upside down in his tantrums. It also wrung a few tears out of me at the end. It was so well written, and the ending was perfect. Phoebe is an infuriating heroine for her contrary ways, and the Duke of Soulford was an excellent love interest to build this sweet romance around.

Historia
When Arabella first arrives in London, she has only one mission: to snare a rich husband. With a mind to beat the competition, she pretends to be a rich heiress and soon finds herself the talk of the town, pursued by the most eligible bachelors in the city. But she has her sights on one man only: the much-hunted Mr Beaumaris. Our feisty heroine puts up a fight and deals the worldly-wise Beaumaris a deft hand in the game of love; at first grudgingly charmed, he soon becomes smitten.

One of my favorites of Georgette Heyer!
Revisado: 02-20-23
I really enjoy this story. The main character, Arabella, is hilarious in the adventures she has, and the shenanigans she gets up to. I particularly enjoy the back and forth between her and Mr. Beuamaris (sorry about spelling, I listened to the book instead of reading it). All the characters were wonderful, Mr. B’s grandma was my favorite because I also had a grandma like that. Blunt and delightful. Phyllida Nash does a phenomenal job of giving all the characters their own voice. I return to this book again and again when I want a fun book to listen to while driving.

Definitely a story of its time.
Revisado: 01-25-23
I enjoyed the story of “Beyond the Black Stump.” I found Stanton to be exceedingly annoying. I think my favorite part of the book is all the action happening in the Outback of Australia. I loved all the characters on Lara station. Pat Reagan and his brother Tom had me laughing while they were discussing how much money to give to Molly for her travels with the Judge. Hilarious.
Once Stanton proposes to Molly and starts saying “honey” this and “hon” that, it really annoyed the crap out me. It might be on me, I had a stupid ex boyfriend who would say “honey” all the time to me and he was a piece of garbage. Most likely it’s my own bias speaking there.
It was hard to listen to how catty the small town people got to Molly, but I suppose the truth hurts. I don’t live in an American small town as perfect as Hazel, obviously, but there are veins of truth. I was as shocked and angry as Molly at Stanton’s view of his youthful assholery and accident that killed Diana.
All in all, there was quite a bit of racism, and some really horrible comments by some of the characters. It was the 1950’s and I’m glad we know better now. They are dead and gone, and we can learn from their mistakes to be better people.
My last observation is who would eat flapjacks, syrup, chicken, ice cream, beans, I think bacon as well, and I can’t remember what else as a 1950’s American in an unairconditioned tent town on the Australian outback? For one meal?! I have to think the heat would have killed you if you got all that down. Maybe all the sugar shriveled their brains.
Anyways, loved Molly and the Australian characters. Found some good in the American ones. Diet was fairly unbelievable. Didn’t love this story as much as I loved Trustee in the Toolroom, but Neville treats his people in the stories well.

I couldn’t stop listening!
Revisado: 11-25-22
I loved all the characters, and Phyllida Nash does an excellent job of giving them voices. My favorite is Adam’s father-in-law and Jenny. Adam infuriates me a few times with fawning over that ridiculous girl. There was quite a bit of military stuff at the end, but it all was necessary to build up the suspense after Adam goes against his father-in-law’s express financial advice. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I love this book. It’s got so much good information in it that I’m going to buy the paper copy. Safety doesn’t have to be expensive. My takeaways from his book are: that you can’t leave your personal safety and the safety of your dependents in the hands of others, you can be safe and make your home safer from invasions and weather events without spending a fortune, and get a dog. Love it.

Now home from Waterloo, life in peacetime is rather dull for the adventure-loving Captain. But when he finds himself lost at an unmanned toll-house in the Pennines, his soldiering days suddenly pale away beside an adventure - and romance - of a lifetime.

Historia
The Earl of Spenborough has always been noted for his eccentricity. Leaving a widow younger than his own daughter Serena is one thing, but quite another is leaving Serena's fortune to the trusteeship of the Marquis of Rotherham -- a man whom Serena once jilted and who now has the power to give or withhold his consent to any marriage she might contemplate. When Serena and her lovely young stepmother Fanny decide to move to Bath, Serena makes an odd new friend and discovers an old love, Major Hector Kirkby.

I can’t get enough of Georgette Heyer and this is the second time I’ve listened to Bath Tangle. I love the character descriptions but Mrs Flor has to be my favorite in her old-fashioned panniers and breathtaking ruby turban with no less than 3 ostrich plumes! She’s a delight, and I wish she was my grandma. As always, Georgette’s vocabulary is immense and glorious, and the insults characters hurl at each other are excellent.
