Historia
Award-winning author and human rights activist Ishmael Beah brings us The Door to Tamba, a powerful story centered on a mining village in West Africa where the destruction of earth and pollution of life impacts the mind, body, and soul of communities. Hindolo, a storyteller, returns to his hometown after 30 years and recalls the solitary and formidable old man who opened his home to him and introduced a world of literature and imagination, which for many years, was his only escape. Hindolo begins writing the stories down on paper stolen from a nearby mine to share with his classmates.

not what I expected
Revisado: 04-20-24
I picked this up thinking it would be more focused on the mining operation/environmental angle, but this is a book about literature and reading rather than mining. If books about books appeal you may like it more.
Writing style was very beautiful but overwritten in regards to messaging in my opinion. Very good narrator.

Historia
In this gloriously over-the-top tale, Aoyama, a widower who has lived alone with his son ever since his wife died seven years before, finally decides it is time to remarry. Since Aoyama is a bit rusty when it comes to dating, a filmmaker friend proposes that, in order to attract the perfect wife, they do a casting call for a movie they don't intend to produce. As the resumes pile up, only one of the applicants catches Aoyama's attention - Yamasaki Asami - a striking young former ballerina with a mysterious past. But she is a far cry from the innocent young woman he imagines her to be.

darkly humorous

I didn't love the movie Audition and the book version didn't change my mind. Despite finding them quite funny I so far have not fully enjoyed any Ryu Murakami works. I always have super mixed feelings about them. He isn't for me, I think.
Very good narration.

Historia
A married couple, Fridolin and Albertine, are troubled by events and jealous of each other’s attentions the night before at a masquerade ball. Suddenly, Fridolin, a doctor, is summoned to the bedside of a dying man, an elderly councilor, whose daughter he finds attractive and vaguely sensual. So begins a series of involvements throughout the night in increasingly dangerous and deviant sexual adventures for Fridolin, who, taken by a friend to a “secret” party, is forced to make more choices that seemingly are beyond his control.

Bad narrator, skeevey

Hated the narrator (Stephen Dexter), especially his female voices. The first thing we hear being a horrible falsetto rendition of a girl child didn't help me warm to him, but even after that his narration style grated on me.
I knew this was the basis for Eyes Wide Shut the film, but having never finished watching that I don't know if it would have prepared me... going into this you should be aware of the uncomfortable number of horny descriptions of preteen/teen girls by a man going through a midlife crisis. It was incredibly offputting and I didn't end up liking the overall story either.

3.5 ☆ sapphic historical mystery

My only issue with the audio was that I could hear an electronic alert in the background of the recording two or three times. It was quite minor but unfortunately immersion-breaking in a historical fiction. Other than that I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator did a great job creating atmosphere and it was very immersive being able to hear the main character code switch between a lower and higher class accent. (I can't vouch for how accurate those accents may or may not be!)

Andre Monroe is ready to move on from heartbreak, and the first step is bringing home his rescue pup. He’d bonded instantly with the playful Zeus and was already planning their first adventures. But one thing he definitely hadn’t daydreamed about was Zeus accidentally being promised to someone else - or that he might go home empty-handed and brokenhearted all over again.

Sweet Body Positive Romance
Revisado: 07-19-23
Super cute, low drama romance with a nice (but short) sex scene. A great romcom premise! Loved having a large-bellied male lead as the typical body type you see for guys in romance and erotica (even in curvy/fat subcategory) isn't my personal preference. André's personality was just as dreamy and I liked Janelle also. 4.5☆
My main gripe was with the narrators. They were both good (excepting the typical slightly overdone falsetto for when Hawk was reading the women characters' lines), but their reading speeds were VERY mismatched. I had to switch back and forth between 1.2x speed for the Marissa Hampton chapters and 1.7x for the Chinua Hawk ones. Not something I've run into at that extreme in a multi-narrator book before.
