Listen to this and wow looking at it in 2024 really brings home how much the world has changed, Everything from science to social conventions is out of place. Published in 1912 I knew from my childhood reading back in the 70s that it be dated as even then it has moments where you come across a bit and find it jarring.
As an Adult found myself cringing at things that when over my head as a child but ERB still made an adventure yarn fun despite the abundance of racial stereotypes, and silly science, did people really believe Apes acted in this fashion?
So read but be warned it reflects it times and you will be triggered as they say today.

You will enjoy, great to revisit the world and this had flashes of what could of been a better story.
Each time the author took the safe path.
She can close to doing a modern take on the formula but instead she stayed true to the path MZB had walked.
I will always want more and maybe someday the writer will allow the newcomer to Darkover to be taken aback by the lack of modern stuff. I mean who wants to deal with chamber pots, no books. Instead, everyone new to the world is suddenly ok with wearing the same clothing and not being able to use a modern toilet, or eating food cooked over a fire. If you camped or done a long hike ir done without toilet paper in your travels this lack of resentment just rings untrue.

Great to have an audio version of a pair of books that lived as a kid. They held up well. Left wanting more, or maybe just trained in todays world of book series- these two a linked and sequels in her Forerunner universe.

Great premise

Always enjoy her work, wish she had done more in this world. The book has a bit too much of a romance feel in a few spots but not enough to put me off. The magic system was fresh and the she do s a great job with characters. A Standalone book but worth your time

Yes you can see some stuff coming but the world is laid out in away that makes you want to go on. Remind me of the Tripods and this is more a YA. Nice break from doom and sex. Great what if story

Why don't I read more of his work is what I ask after every book. Great book and makes me long for the SW, the land there is special and the people are so different from the City life of the 95 Corridor.
Take a plunge if you have not read his work yet- if you know the writer you already are going to get the book!

Very light but intriguing

The protagonist called Pet has a snarky cocky attitude. Ok some holes in story like a street kid trying to save to buy the house she squats in but the write in the end has a twist on this seeming hole in plot. Set around Hobart Tasmania. Lots of local references that got me curious enough to go googling. On to book two series been out but the audio versions looked to have come out in 2019 on Audible.
