Therapists are people too
Revisado: 09-07-19
Im a psychologist in private practice. I often find it difficult to explain to people what it is like to do my job every day. The author does a masterful job of blending the personal and professional and the dilemma of when the two might conflate or be at odds. I hope this provides insight to people who might be afraid to go to therapy or talk to someone who is a therapist in their social lives. It’s also a great read for therapists. I found myself more energized to go into the office, with a renewed sense of why I do this work.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

The first half is great
Revisado: 06-25-19
The second half had a completely different tone than the first. And the pacing was odd. We spend the first half hearing every rich detail of one year of her life, in the second, we hear about the rest. It looses its charm and feels rushed. Too bad. I loved the first part.

Historia
Margot Cary has spent her life immersed in everything Lake Sackett is not. As an elite event planner, Margot's rubbed elbows with the cream of Chicago society and made elegance and glamour her business. She's riding high until one event goes tragically, spectacularly wrong. Now she's blackballed by the gala set and in dire need of a fresh start - and apparently the McCreadys are in need of an event planner with a tarnished reputation.

Revisado: 03-22-18
I love Molly Harper! And One Last Thing is one of my all time favorites. This book is... fine... it just wasn’t my favorite of hers. I missed the tension and snark that her characters usually have.

Historia
Emi Harrison has avoided her ex-fiance, Jack Cabot, for nearly two years. Her twin brother Evan's wedding is about to end that streak. From bad bridesmaids' dresses, a hyperactive sister-in-law, a mean girl with even meaner secrets, and too much to drink, nothing seems to go right for Emi, except when she's wearing her little gray dress. When she speed-walks into Liam Jaxon's bar, things get more complicated. He's gorgeous, southern, and has no past with Emi. He may be exactly what she needs to prove for the last time that she doesn't need or want Jack!

The conflict resolves too easily. It’s hard to believe that everything works out so perfectly without much struggle... not very realistic

Cute story
Revisado: 12-12-17
Fun and light listen. The narrators’s accent is distracting. Only one of the characters is Irish but all are read with a slight irish accent. Made it hard to tell who was speaking sometimes.

Historia
Leaving one widow behind is unfortunate. Leaving three widows behind is just plain despicable. Oil heiress Kate Steele knew her not-so-dearly departed husband was a con man, but she's shocked that Conrad racked up two more wives without divorcing her first. The only remnant of their miserable marriage she plans to keep is their lakeside cabin in Bootleg, Texas. Unfortunately, she's not the only woman with that idea.

Meh
Revisado: 11-06-17
It was a little saccharine. I feel like the author missed the mark in creating good conflict in a premise that should have been chock full of it. I was hoping for way more of... well anything other than a nice story about women who get back on their feet with relative ease.

Historia
Vanessa Mazur knows she's doing the right thing. She shouldn't feel bad for quitting. Being an assistant/housekeeper/fairy godmother to the top defensive end in the National Football Organization was always supposed to be temporary. She has plans, and none of them include washing extra-large underwear longer than necessary. But when Aiden Graves shows up at her door wanting her to come back, she's beyond shocked.

Too long

This was a sweet book and definitely a slow burn. Honestly, it could have been 6 hours and we would have gotten the point. Way too much inner monologue, not nearly enough substance.

What a great surprise!
Revisado: 08-14-13
I listen to a lot of books on tape. I chose this book because I love Susan Bennet as a narrator and I though the story looked interesting. I have to say I enjoyed this book in a way I haven't enjoyed one in a long time. It was funny, sexy, exciting and frankly a lot of fun. I hope the sequel comes to audible sometime soon!

So incredibly boring
Revisado: 03-14-13
I was unaware that this was a Christian book. Even so, are people of faith really that vanilla and boring? You really want me to believe that a Chicago homicide cop doesn't swear and is so wholesome that he could give Ward Cleaver a run for his money? Not to mention that the heroine, who is apparently a master at a million activities that are in no way related is a 40 year old virgin ?!? I know this is fiction, but the reason I like fiction is it is more exciting than real life. In this book, there is no chemistry, little action, and creepy "dates" where they watch each other do nothing via webcam. Also, the narrator has no ability to do a female voice.

Historia
What would you do if the gynecologist subbing for your regular doctor turned out to be your old high school crush? Successful psychologist Dr. Jennifer Monroe does what any normal, well-adjusted woman would do. She makes an excuse to send the doctor and nurse from the room, dives into her clothes, and flees! Unfortunately, her running away makes conscientious Dr. Penrose conclude she has some kind of sexual hangup. He's determined to refer her to another doctor for her health's sake. If he can just talk to her, he'll suggest counseling for what he thinks are emotional problems.

Great idea, poorly written and formulaic
Revisado: 02-13-13
It was such a fun premise, that I decided to pick it up and give it a try. Now I know romance novels are not known for their creativity, but the writer lost me at every turn. It was as though she was trying to be funny instead of actually being funny. People don't really think like that, these characters (who are supposed to be doctors!!) think and act like people who cannot tie their shoes. It could have been clever and fun, two really smart people trying to outwit each other. The only problem is, neither of them were written as though they had any brains at all. It was really disappointing.
