I'm a huge Asimov fan, so it pains me to be critical, but "The Gods Themselves" is not great work. He sets up two (or is it three?) different worlds that we know little about. Through the course of the book, we slowly learn about them as the characters from each world learn about each other. Within the framework, loaded with interpersonal relationships that are rather boring, we learn about the overall dangerous plot.

It's an interesting plot, but old Isaac was never particularly good with characters and dialogue.

I've ready a fair bit of science fiction and was excited by the reviews of Hyperion and with a free credit, I added it to my list. I started listening to it right away and found the performers to be solid and believable.

As for the story, I found it to be cliched, repetitive and unsatisfying. It didn't offer any new concepts and relied far too heavily on human characters and history. I found myself eagerly awaiting the end and despite there being no payoff, I was pleased because I was happy to be done with this dreck. To think this won the same award as books written by the likes of Asimov, Clarke, Gibson and Niven boggles the mind (or at least makes me question the award). There will be no more follow-on Simmons books for me.

Caveat lector.

Fantastic story, read ably by Scott Brick. The novel is a remarkable first step towards unifying the Author's major series, made all the more impressive by the near 40 year gap since last working with the material.

Reading like a detective novel, Second Foundation is a brilliant conclusion to the best Science Fiction series ever written.
