Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

A rare, full five stars. Could barely put it down. Beautiful prose, outstanding world building, deftly drawn characters (even the supporting cast), tactile atmosphere, brilliant storyline. Kudos for a superb narration.
Sequel nearly a year away. 😲

Historia
Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified “readers,” is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe. Conscripted into the military under dubious circumstances, Tennal is placed into the care of Lieutenant Surit Yeni, a duty-bound soldier, principled leader, and the son of a notorious traitor general. Whereas Tennal can read minds, Surit can influence them.

Nox doesn't know who he is, but he's sure of three things, his memory loss is temporary, the monsters chasing Luca are called Anubis, and his Alpha, Koda, sent Nox to protect him. There's just one problem.... Koda is Luca's brother who was murdered five years ago.

If you liked the book, you'll love the audiobook.
Revisado: 10-16-19
4.5 stars
All my complaints about the horrific editing in the ebook melted away with the audio performance. Kirt Graves was very good.
I still maintain this not a romance. This is sci-fi/paranormal with a strong love story. If a listener goes into this story expecting a romance, said reader will most likely be disappointed. Secondly, I'm not sure I consider this a shifter story, certainly not in the classic sense. I felt it was more solidly in the sci-fi arena, but you be the judge. That said, it's a truly brilliant, gut wrenching tale.
- Great world building
- Deftly drawn characters
- Brilliant concept
- Compelling storyline
- Atmospheric
- Lots of "show" and little "tell"
- The science!
- Colorful secondary cast
I still have the same HUGE complaint that I had about the book... how sex is employed as a simplistic, gratuitous solution to a complicated issue. A fair amount of eye rolling occurred during the untold number of sex scenes throughout the story. But all in all, it's simply dazzling storytelling.

Good book, glorious audiobook
Revisado: 09-03-19
I thought it was a very good book when I read it last year; I placed it on my "honorable mention" list for 2018. But when an incredibly talented voice actor like Joel Leslie performs this marvelous story... it becomes sublime. The prose all the more stunning, the story line even more brilliant, deftly drawn characters explode into life, and the atmosphere becomes something in which a listener could drown. Highly recommended. More, please!

Still a joy to read and listen to!
Revisado: 05-24-19
I read this series back in about 2002/3. Absolutely loved it. Then in 2006, it was released on audio. Stefan Rudnicki was the perfect choice to bring this epic sci-fi journey to life. I've listened to it several times over the years and every time feels like reconnecting with old friends, like... coming home. A breathtaking trek across an unknown world, deftly drawn characters readers will fall in love with, fascinating tech both high and low, atmospheric in a way so dense you can cut it with a knife. One hell of a romp. Highly recommended.

Historia
Gordo has found himself once again the witch of the Bennett pack. Green Creek has settled after the death of Richard Collins, and Gordo constantly struggles to ignore Mark and the song that howls between them. But time is running out. Something is coming. And this time, it’s crawling from within. Some bonds, no matter how strong, were made to be broken.

I loved Wolfsong with all my heart. But this one?
Revisado: 01-09-19
1.5 stars
Who the hell takes 10 days to listen to an audiobook? Someone who constantly put it down in disgust or boredom or was afraid her eyes would get stuck because she rolled them so often. I put it to bed this afternoon at 90%. After 10 days I couldn’t take it anymore. "That's a long wait for a train don't come."
Sophomoric/lazy writing, repetitive, frustrating, depressing, far too long, and flat-out exhausting. We never really get to see all this magical power the author has endowed on Gordo (who was truly unlikable for most of this book), and that felt like a betrayal. It felt like Gordo couldn't have protected himself if he'd had a fully-loaded M16 and a backup rocket launcher. What fight scenes there were... terribly disappointing. The primary antagonist (a hunter) was truly a sanctimonious caricature of villainy. Her religious, self-righteous speeches in the audiobook made me want to find an ice pick for my ears.
I think the author made a mistake writing this book (narrated by Gordo) with the same clipped, simplistic, repetitive language and cadence he used in Wolfsong. It worked brilliantly for Ox, but it doesn’t work here. This isn't the way I pictured Gordo speaking, thinking, or acting. And since I listened only to the audio version of the story, I have to add a similar comment about narrator Kirt/Kurt Graves who also performed Wolfsong. He was a good choice for that story, but he was absolutely the wrong voice actor for this book. His limited vocal range and monotonic delivery really showed here. Even in present day, almost everyone sounded like teenagers. Some sounded drunk, drugged, or mentally challenged.
I feel bereft, as I loved Wolfsong with all my heart. Even the few awesome moments in this story will never encourage me to read on in the series. No more Green Creek. No more Tj Klune.

Historia
Being a fugitive in the Old West shouldn’t be this much fun. The year is 1860. Robby Riverton is a rising star on the New York stage. But he witnesses a murder by a famous crime boss and is forced to go on the run - all the way to Santa Fe. When he still can't seem to ditch his pursuers, he disguises himself as a mail-order bride he meets on the wagon train. Caught between gangsters who want to kill him and the crazy, uncouth family of his "intended", Robby's only ally is a lazy sheriff who sees exactly who Robby is.

Not as good as the 2014 novella
Revisado: 07-27-18
2.5 stars overall
I think it was the absolutely marvelous narrator, Philip Alces, who unwittingly helped highlight what's wrong with this expanded version of a favorite novella. In my review of the most recent version of the ebook, I quoted fellow Goodreads reviewer Cleo who put one of my strongest issues with this longer version into a better synopsis than I could muster: “I felt like the MC turned into a completely useless Disney princess type character - honest, beautiful, trusting, and with less sense of self preservation than one of my houseplants.” Where was this guy's backbone? I can't remember the last time I rolled my eyes so much and was this disgusted with a protagonist who truly was a gutless wonder. As I said in my review of the expanded book, I did NOT feel this way with the 2014 novella.
