Lipstadt explores the history of the Yishuv and Jewish state from the 1920s through the 1973 Yom Kippur War, all while highlighting the contradictions and complexities of a person who was only the third woman to serve as a head of state in the 20th century.

Do You Feel Like I Do? is the incredible story of Peter Frampton's positively resilient life and career told in his own words for the first time. His monu-mental album Frampton Comes Alive! spawned three top-20 singles and sold eight million copies the year it was released (more than 17 million to date), and it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in January 2020.

Wow
Revisado: 06-21-23
This is a powerful story of war, Holocaust, love, survival, resistance and family. Setting is China, a locale not typically included in Holocaust or WWII literature. Weina Dai Randel is a superb storyteller who brings her characters to life. Cultural and religious depictions are accurate and authentic unlike so many authors. Narration is outstanding, with distinct voices for the different characters. I understand that Weina’s fourth novel is just as outstanding. It is second on my reading list.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

I loved this book. This is an entertaining story, told with humor, insights and historical significance. The retro look at women scientists reminds us of how far we’ve come and how far we have to go.

I enjoyed listening to this sweet story. It had nuanced characters and some surprising turns of events. It’s not intellectually demanding and that’s ok when you want a pleasant story in an audiobook.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Everything about this book is 5+ stars: story, performance, social and historical significance. Although fiction, it’s more informative about and illustrative of the opioid and drug abuse epidemic than an impersonal non-fiction could be.

Historia
After years of trying to make it as a writer in 1990s New York City, James Smale finally sells his novel to an editor at a major publishing house: none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jackie - or Mrs. Onassis, as she's known in the office - has fallen in love with James' candidly autobiographical novel, one that exposes his own dysfunctional family. But when the book's forthcoming publication threatens to unravel already fragile relationships, both within his family and with his partner, James finds that he can't bring himself to finish the manuscript.

The best Joseph Bridgman yet! That’s saying something
Revisado: 09-05-22
I have enjoyed each of the three Joseph Bridgman stories but this third one exceeds the others in creative details, fantastical images and interwoven story lines. I didn’t think that Nick Jones could improve on the first two, yet he has. The narrator is the same for all three books and does a wonderful job differentiating each character with a unique and recognizable voice and personality. He brings the stories to life.
I’m so glad to see that a fourth book is due to be published soon. By the way, I never was a sci fi fan, but I am hooked on the Joseph Bridgman stories.

Historical fiction at its best
Revisado: 06-14-22
Herman Wouk’s classical novel, based on historical records, tells of the modern state of Israel’s early days pre-1948 through the Six Day War with a good measure of fictionalized heroes, romances, and political shenanigans. It’s well worth listening for 27+ hours for anyone interested in the modern Middle East.
As for Mark Ashby’s performance, I gave him 5 stars. Although I might have agreed with some of previous reviewers’ criticism when I first started listening, I eventually realized that he did a credible job portraying multiple characters, male and female, who spoke with multiple accents and in different languages. As actor-narrator, Ashby did a remarkable job differentiating each character with a unique accent and maintained each character’s unique voice throughout the 27+ hours. During story narration, when he was not portraying any character, he maintained the same tone and pitch enabling the listener to know this is the story, not a character speaking. Yes, there are errors in the Hebrew language which I know fairly well: eg, hamoud vs hamouda, mutek vs mutekah, dod vs doda. Since Wouk knew Hebrew, I can only assume the responsibility for errors rests with Audible. (BTW, Audible please be cautious about accents. Another book in my “read” list had a Greek character who spoke English with a Latino Spanish accent. Really? I am fluent in Spanish.) So, kol hakavod Mark!
I loved this book and bought The Glory for my next marathon listen! (Mark, I hope you do as well with this one.)
